In 2008, the McCain campaign figured out early on that their vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin was incapable of giving an interview to actual journalists, as opposed to the pretend ones on Fox, and so canceled all her prospective interviews in the run-up to the election.

There is a similar dynamic at play in the 2012 election. The Romney campaign has learned from experience that when Mitt does not have a teleprompter in front of him or a long stream of memorized talking points — in other words, when he speaks extemporaneously — disaster ensues. They spent all of August and September cleaning up messes he had made.

So now, with less than two weeks before the election, they have quietly announced that they are treating Mitt the way the McCain campaign dealt with Palin — other than reading speeches off teleprompters at campaign rallies, Romney is going dark … until after he’s elected?

How will this work if Mitt becomes president? He is even more gaffe-tastic than Bush, but even worse, he won’t have anyone remotely similar to Bush’s “brain,” Karl Rove, guiding his every political move in the White House.

For now, Pres. Obama and the First Lady have a heavy schedule of interviews lined up with the network anchors, MTV and others.

What do the board Republicans think of this strategy?

Mitt has lost all momentum he had in the polls. So basically I guess his campaign is saying he's peaked, and we don't want anymore of the fuckups that led to this ****** being one of the most unfavorably viewed candidates in history?

Well that's awesome, except the guy is still trailing, so how do you expect to make up ground?

Romney has won one election in his life.

And he ended his tenure as Governor of Massachusetts with a 33% approval rating. And he's going to lose that state, and probably the rest of his "home states" to Obama.

Why is anyone voting for this failure again? I mean fuck at least McCain was good enough to win Arizona...

Who cares if he loses a state like Mass?

He's gonna win the election, barring some major corruption from your POS (which has already started)

Really? You don't see a problem with being so poorly regarded in the state you governed (a governor is like a mini-president, dbair) that you don't stand a chance against the incumbent president who, according to you and fox news, is the biggest failure in the history of our country?

First, I dont know that he doesnt stand a chance.

Second, who cares? The majority is going to support him because they dont want to be like liberal loser states like Illinois, California, NY etc etc

Whats it say about your clod when he is in a dead heat in Michigan, one of the most left leaning & union strong states in the nation?

I don't blame them for not granting interviews. MSM lobs softball questions at Obama but always goes for some "gotcha" question with Republican's.

Massachusetts is one of the most liberal states in the US. Of course Obama will win there.

Many of these polls are still using models based on Obama's '08 turnout. We shall see, but I doubt he gets comparable turnout this time.

Yep

And pretty significant overpolling of dems in virtually all of them.

The poll of just independents is one people should be paying attention to.

Thats why nobody really knows what's going to happen.

If you use 08 turnout models, you're doing it wrong.

Mitt Romney hasn’t given a national television interview since sitting down with Wolf Blitzer on CNN 23 days ago. He has not answered a single question from the press in 22 days. Among the requests that he has turned down, Romney has refused to answer questions from children on Nickelodeon. He has refused to be interviewed and take the questions of young voters on MTV. Romney was so terrified of The View that he canceled and sent his wife in his place. He has turned down David Letterman, and every major news network including Fox News. Bill O’Reilly has been screaming at the top of his lungs trying to get an interview with Romney before election day, but the Romney campaign made it clear on October 23 that they were scheduling no more interviews. However, this ban has also extended to the members of the press who are covering Romney everyday. The pool reporters covering Romney ask questions each day, and the candidate pretends that he doesn’t hear them. This has gone on for the last 22 days.

The fourth estate is a critical pillar of our society, positioned to act as a fourth branch of government and one that is important to a functioning democracy. Even when our press is doing their job, they favor Republicans. The 4th Estate did a study between May 1 and July 15, 2012 that found, “(N)ewsmakers appearing in the media as partisan Republicans are quoted at a 44% higher rate than partisan Democrats. Additionally, the ratio of positive to negative coverage was 17.1% more critical of Obama than Romney.” What’s Romney so afraid of?

Most media outlets, including the so called “liberal” outlets, are markedly more negative in their coverage of Obama than of Romney. The 4th Estate study results confirm previous studies showing that Obama gets more negative press than Romney, particularly when it comes to covering financial information like getting rid of oil company subsidies and taxing the rich. In other words, the people’s needs are already being compromised by profit-driven news.

When a candidate avoids the press altogether, that candidate is not only allowed to craft their own narrative regardless of how far removed it may be from reality, but they also show an unwillingness to be checked by the 4th branch of government.

The press is supposed to exist to help citizens make sense of the world. They have a responsibility to be the people’s watchdog and hence are protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.

What does it say that Mitt Romney won’t even answer a question from the press? He has avoided answering questions on his tax plan math, Todd Akin, Robert Mourdock and now FEMA. He has refused to ever discuss his church or his beliefs, an attitude that must be a privilege only applying to Republicans as we recall how brutally Obama was grilled about Reverend Wright.

Mitt Romney doesn’t seem to value the basic tenet of democracy – the notion of checks and balances, as provided in part by the press. The press pool covering him are doing their job (unlike some of the Sunday show “journalists”), but he is just ignoring them.

The curtain the Romney campaign hung in the plane to cut the pool off even further from the candidate was symbolic of his disdain and contempt for the press. After much pushback, the campaign took the curtain down. The press is the supposed to be the people’s voice, but Romney won’t respond to their questions. The only interview he will do is with a sports journalist on Monday Night Football the night before the election.

I like sp, but I think I would really punch him in the face if I ran across him in person one hour before quiting time on friday.

Obama, ignores any questions he doesnt like, harrases and bans reporters who ask, but I got to read sp bolding this sh1t about romney. Which might be notable if his own guy hadnt spent 4 years being blatantly more dimisive of the press corp. But it is his guy so can do no wrong.
