Cardinals hope to reach a long-term deal with Calais Campbell

12/19/2011 3:19:03 PM | More

The Cardinals continue to talk with the agent for defensive end Calais Campbell about a new contract, and General Manager Rod Graves is hopeful a deal can be reach "sooner rather than later" according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

"We've been in negotiations for some time," Graves said. "Not only has Calais performed well on the field, but he's also been superb off the field as a representative of this team."

Graves declined further comment, and Campbell's agent, Ben Dogra, has not responded to interview requests.

Campbell is in the last year of his contract and is making $600,000 in base salary. He leads the team in sacks with seven and has blocked three field goals this year.

I think we sit back and let the market settle, like we usually do, and then sign 2-3 marginal players. Then whatever our glaring need still is we can listen to Jerry sugarcoat it and act like we'll be fine with our current set of players there.
Then once the season starts we'll all watch as our glaring achilles heel loses games for us.

It's like Groundhogs Day in Dallas...

I definitely think we ignore our interior Oline and go defense heavy in the draft, with the team using what Nagy showed and Arkin as our supposed answer to the line woes.

You both are probably right but at the same time you have to think the losing, or at least not advancing to championship games, is starting to piss Jerry off. He only has himself to blame since he did nada in the 2010 off-season and made 1 minor upgrade in 2011. Don't tell me about the draft because all 32 teams participate in the draft. Stephen Bowen to Kenyon Coleman was a downgrade. Alan Ball to Abe Elam was the 1 upgrade but who wouldn't have been an upgrade over Ball?

The core of this team needs to win in the next few years or they will have been wasted. Jerry has to be aggressive this off-season or we will continue to be a borderline playoff team.

What's the chance of Alan Ball returning next year, guys?

I mean, you don't find too many players who can play both CB and Safety, so I assume the percentages must be up there.

Since when is Ahmad Brooks considered a upgrade?

I thought we were trying to get better at the position.

I think we draft one OG and maybe a KR/WR the rest should be on D

1 Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

2 Nick Perry*, DE/OLB, USC

3 Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

4 Derek Wolfe, DE/DT, Cincinnati

5 Delvin Johnson, DT/NT, Marshall

6 Carmen Messina, ILB, New Mexico

6 Tramain Thomas, FS, Ark

7 Chris Owusu, KR/SWR, Stanford

I like this Minnifield idea. He comes from the best school in the nation, so he's likely a boss.

Campbell would be a great add, but as I said before I just dont see the Cards letting him walk. They'll franchise him and try to trade him before that happens.

Maybe... maybe not. Who all thought that the Cards would let Karlos Dansby walk?
