Rookie Phillip Tanner has been active for three games this season. He recorded his first stats Sunday when he made two tackles on special teams against the Patriots.
But Tanner is ready for more, if the Cowboys need him to do more.
Felix Jones will miss at least the next two weeks, and probably three or four, with a high left ankle sprain. While Tashard Choice and DeMarco Murray will split the load in Jones' place, Tanner could see his first action on offense as the third running back.
"I feel I’m prepared, but there’s always room for improvement," Tanner said Wednesday. "That’s why I go out every day, take every rep seriously, study film, study my opponents, just get in trust with the offensive linemen so we can go out and have a great game."
The Dallas Kimball and Middle Tennessee State product made the team as an undrafted free agent after leading the Cowboys in rushing with 128 yards on 28 carries, a 5.3 average. He also caught one pass for 3 yards.
"Phillip had a nice preseason for us," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. "He played well in the opportunities that he got in those preseason games. He's a rookie. He's a rookie free agent. He didn't have an off-season, but he did have a good training camp and a good preseason. He's done a nice job the last couple of weeks getting on the active roster, contributing a little bit on special teams. So if the time comes where he needs to go in the ball game and play, we're certainly confident in putting him in there."
