Jerry Jones Addresses Criticism

Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith discuss recent comments made by Jerry Jones, who said he enjoys the pain brought on by his critics.Tags: Cowboys, Jerry Jones, Skip Bayless, Stephen A. Smith

Will Allen was a member of the Dallas Cowboys for all of four games, but the veteran safety believes he knows why the team is not more successful.

"It was a very micro-managed atmosphere," Allen told Sirius XM NFL Radio on Tuesday night. "Everything was heightened. Everything was very tight. I didn't feel the relationship and the bonding between players and coaches. Maybe just the players. Or maybe just a few coaches and a few players.

"I think that's the rift that you get and everybody wonders why Dallas can't finish; why Dallas isn't completing everything it needs to. The players are great. The players are tremendous. The coaches are some of the best in the business. You just need a cohesion there that allows players and coaches to really execute and do their jobs and it's not something hanging over their heads, that if they mess up you're going to get cut or you're not going to play or not going to do this. That's not fun for anybody."

Allen started the Cowboys' first two games before he was replaced by rookie J.J. Wilcox. He was released on Oct. 8 and has since re-joined the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had 9 tackles in four games in Dallas to go with an interception and three passes defensed.

"I'm not sure what role it played in them releasing me, but they didn't feel like I as if I fit in their scheme or their organization," Allen said. "It's probably true. I have a lot of respect for the coaches there. I have a lot of respect even for Jerry Jones, but obviously it didn't fit. I wasn't the player they thought I would be or that I am."

For years, one of the criticisms of the Cowboys, with owner and general manager Jerry Jones so involved, was a lack of accountability. Veterans or high draft picks would be handed jobs and keep them based on status, not on performance.

Jason Garrett has attempted to change that attitude since taking over as coach. In addition to jettisoning Allen, Orlando Scandrick continued to start over Morris Claiborne at cornerback once Claiborne's injured shoulder healed. Mackenzy Bernadeau was replaced by Brian Waters at right guard. Tight end Gavin Escobar, a second-round pick, has not been able to beat out James Hanna.

Allen said the atmosphere is different in Pittsburgh.

"Everybody's given a chance to prove themselves, given a chance to play together and the guys we truly sincerely believe in everyone," Allen said. "The coaches believe in the players. The players believe in the coaches and you just see this even path now. If guys are consistently not performing, you're not going to be on the field. Obviously you're not going to play. But everybody is encouraging, everybody is uplifting, everybody is pushing for everybody's best. That's what you want. We understand that it's a business but football is a business. Winning is our business. But if we're not a team, if we're not together in it all, then we have nothing. That's the mindset in Pittsburgh."

In six games with the Steelers, Allen has nine tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and one pass defensed.

He was here for 3.5 minutes and got cut because he sucks, I'm sure he can diagnose the problem.

We kinda should have found that out in training camp and not after he played on opening day. Now we owe him his entire salary.

The problem is you don't cut a player before you are certain that you have something better than a Heath or a Wilcox waiting to fill the roster spot.
"This is your captain speaking. I'm going to take big long nap but I have a flight attendant who will be taking over my chair flying us through the scheduled hurricane and landing us in a minefield. Not to worry though, she has one year of flight training, and she attended Saginaw State. We are in good hands. Good night."

Hasn't the complaint always been "there's no accountability in Dallas" though? People begging to cut Doug Free and Orlando Scandrick, suggesting the only reason we don't do it is the culture of entitlement that Jerry fosters (even though we've got noone better than them in reserve).

And Will Allen says it's the exact opposite. Once we ditch Garrett will Jones come out and talk about how everyone was "walking on eggshells" a la Parcells again?

Bingo and for all the bitching I do about the Cowboys, I'm not about to gripe about holding players accountable and micro managing things, I'd say both are perceived as long overdue

Not much of a response, but I thought I would throw it out there. They players sound like they don not care.

Cowboys respond to S Will Allen’s comments about how team is micromanaged

Pittsburgh safety Will Allen, who began the season with the Cowboys, has said he didn’t feel that a true bond developed between the players and coaches at Valley Ranch because the atmosphere was micromanaged.

Scandrick calls Allen a great guy and said he respects his opinion, but declined to agree or disagree.

“I’m not going to get into that, man,” Scandrick said. “We need to win football games. It is what it is.

“If it’s going to be micromanaged, we’re 5-5. It’s not good enough. Whatever we’re doing, whether it be micromanaged or not micromanaged, it’s not good enough. We need to figure out a way to turn it around and win football games.”

Head coach Jason Garrett said he had no comment beyond the fact that he has a great deal of respect for Allen. Tight end Jason Witten said he loved having Allen as a teammate but doesn’t see what the veteran safety was talking about.

“I think it’s a pretty good group, coaches and players,” Witten said. “I mean, guys work together and believe in each other, believe in the staff. There is a respect there. We want to win for them, they want to win for us. It’s coaches and players, and players and players. It’s a great group of guys that go out and work their tails off every day.

“I don’t think there are micromanagers. There is always the pressure to go perform, and that’s in 31 other locker rooms as well. It’s part of playing in pro football.”

One year ago, former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson spoke of what he saw as a country club atmosphere at Valley Ranch.

“Yeah, we can’t do much right around here, I guess,” Witten said. “You’d rather have it that way [Allen’s comments] than country club.”

Jason is so sly. Hell, both Jason's are.

They says they have respect for someone and sometimes they means it, and at other times they just means the guy is a piece of shit who talked about their team.
