This was a Todd Archer response to a Twitter question about Dallas using trick plays last year. Seems to be a little dark sarcasm in the undertone of Archers response. Without further adieu, from the people who brought you "If Jason does not show up for games, Dallas is more likely to win..." we get this:
@toddarcher: You haven't seen them because Jason Garrett doesn't believe in them. Jacques Taylor and I have a game in the press box where we say, 'Here comes the flea-flicker,' and obviously it never happens. It used to happen under Bill Parcells. He had a good sense of timing on when to use a trick play. Garrett doesn't believe in tricks. He believes in execution. It's sound thinking, but I do think there is something to be said for the element of surprise. He did use an on-side kick last season against Washington that proved to be a big play that led to a Dallas blowout. But I wouldn't go holding your breath for a trick play on offense.

I agree that Garrett is basically our biggest liability, but I don't think with our QB, our receivers, our OL, or our run game where we need to rely on trick plays.

Then again... Aikman to Smith flicked back and hitting Ismail for a walk off OT game winner was a thing of beauty. I do love a well executed flea flicker. Even Bledsoe to Glenn was greatness.

"Trick" plays also called "gadget" plays require a HIGH LEVEL of execution. Use of them when least expected is brilliant. NOBODY "relies" on them.

The problem I think Garrett has with them is the amount of practice time they require.

Actually it was well executed play action that won that game.

Whatta play. He didn't have to slow down or stop for it. And the FEAR of Emmitt Smith really shows on that play.

stupid fucking thread

There's this concept that when you don't like something, you don't have to post.

And similarly, the answer to why Dallas most challenging opponent is the headcoach is that every play is a trick play. There is not a single play in any offense that doesn't involve hiding the intent and manipulating the defense. The element of surprise is supposed to be on every play. The part that Dallas is losing out to 31 other coaches in the league is that the mere use of more complex orchestration (flea flicker) in the plays actually affords an offense the tension that the defense must guard against that more complex orchestration occurring. Anything resembling that play forces the defense to pause and consider the possibility. Play action, which was one of the founding scaffolds of this offense, is a simple orchestration which is a trick play. Every intentionally hidden route combination is a simple trick play.

The part that Jason refuses to do is put the work in to design more complexly orchestrated plays that build off of the scheme theory he uses. Executing a play that a defense is anticipating gives the defense the advantage. Since there are only a finite number of route combinations, the defense is really only at the disadvantage when the initial routes end and the haywire run around that happens after. That's really where the only element of surprise is that there are no predescribed routes after the initial routes end. The plan for the secondary routes are just as Jason stated "we tell them to just stay alive". That's really where Dallas gets the majority of their element of surprise aside from the variability of where a running play may go - and those "just stay alive" plays are where Tony does his best work and where he is most at risk.

There are no plays that are drawn up by the coach for desperation or situations where the team has hope. Instead, the team gets to 4th down and 2 against the Packers in a playoff and the play (that even if successful would give Rodgers the ball back with over a minute to go) is what Steve Young criticised as a "fifty-fifty bubble gum pass that required Dez to climb over the WR to get".

Nobody should rely on trick plays but you'd be stupid to leave them out of your play book.

They're cheap yards and often points that can help get things going when you're struggling to establish something.

That play was on Romo. He goes into great detail on that play and choice to throw to Dez.

Ahhh, Fuck it, lest just blame Garrett.

Speaking of the Aikman/Rocket TD...........

I was at a Jets/Cheatriots game in the Meadowlands 1st NFL game of 1999. I spent most of the day watching the End Zone League Scoreboard for the Cowboys/Foreskins game score.

I was wearing my Cowboys coat, jersey, hat, etc and pretty much everyone inside and outside the game was busting on me asking me if I was lost, or got the schedule wrong.

My long time room mate/bro Brian, God Rest his soul (NO Bob, we arent/werent homos either) was a Die Hard Patriots fan (since the early 1980's) and they won that day also. I had to protect him from getting his ass kicked in the parking lot after the game.

I didnt know The Cowboys won that game until 1/2 hour after we got out of Meadowlands Stadium in the parking lot. We were partying with all Jets fans and we had a blast. Someone asked why I was not celebrating and I said because I thought the Cowboys lost to the Foreskins. I was directed to a van with live TV ESPN scores and thats when I learned about the Aikman/Rocket TD.

Great memories...:clap

You guys just don't get it. We run trick plays all the time with Garrett. 2nd and 1? We run a trick pass to try and fool the D. 1st and goal at the 1? Pass it baby to try and fool the D again. Jason is the king of trying to fool our opponents.
