Weighty issue? Ratliff down 18 pounds
July, 29, 2011
By Todd Archer
SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys have listed the official weights for players on their rosters after they underwent physicals on Wednesday and there are some notable changes.
The biggest change belongs to nose tackle Jay Ratliff. Listed at 303 pounds last year, he checked in at 285 pounds this year. Already one of the lightest nose tackles – if not the lightest – in a 3-4 scheme Ratliff has always relied more on quickness and leverage than bulk. Considering the beating nose tackles in a 3-4 take during the course of a season that number is a little surprising but maybe it means he could see some time at end.
Center Andre Gurode, who is on the physically unable perform list because of knee surgery in June, checked in at 334 pounds, which is 16 pounds over what he was listed at in 2010. Considering the surgery and the rest Gurode needed before beginning his rehab, that’s not too surprising so the time with associate athletic trainer Britt Brown could help him. Montrae Holland, the projected starter at right guard, is 14 pounds heavier than last year at 340.
Much was made of Felix Jones’ added bulk to 220 pounds last year, and he dropped some weight during the season because he did not feel as quick on his feet. He checked into camp at 219.
Some other numbers:
Jon Kitna went from 230 to 219; Martellus Bennett went from 275 to 267:wha?; Dez Bryant went from 217 to 225; Jason Witten went from 262 to 259 and outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer dropped a combined 12 pounds. Spencer is now 253 (from 260) and Ware is 257 (from 262).
