Week 2 is over and the Cowboys go into the home opener 1-1 following a dramatic 27-24 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday afternoon. We look at who played well and who didn't in our weekly Stock Report
STOCK UP
Jesse Holley. The man was nearly in tears in the locker room after the game. He didn't get an offensive snap for three quarters and when Miles Austin went down with a nagging hamstring injury, Holley stepped up with three catches for 96 yards, including a 77 yard burst in overtime to setup the game-winning field goal.
Tony Romo. You can question whether Romo makes plays in the clutch, but never question his toughness. He played with a fractured rib, tried to comeback before the pain medication kicked in and still led the Cowboys to a game-winning drive. Officially Romo completed 20 of 33 passes for 345 yards with two touchdowns and a 116.4 quarterback rating. Unofficially he's one of the toughest Cowboys on the squad.
DeMarcus Ware. Somehow this man fights through constant double-teams to earn a living. Ware finished with two sacks, he's got four on the year, and his play opens the door for others. Jason Hatcher had two sacks and Anthony Spencer added one more. Ware finished with just two tackles, big deal. He added two tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries to his ledger.
STOCK DOWN
Felix Jones. The starting running back wanted to be the best in the NFL this season. What we got is a 2.7 yards per carry average after two weeks. Jones suffered a dislocated shoulder, and to his credit played through it. However, Jones has battled nagging injuries in his time with the Cowboys and this latest one continues the questions about his durability.
Jon Kitna. Kinta completed eight passes on Sunday with Romo out, but two went to the other team. Kitna struggled badly in place of an injured Romo and didn't perform with the same gusto as last year. Maybe it was a bad day, but it's clear the Cowboys can't afford to miss Romo for any extended period of time.
Jason Garrett. Yes, Jerry Jones said Garrett is the spirit of the team, but he made two questionable play calls that put his star players at risk for further injury. In the first quarter, with Romo clearly hurting after taking a shot in the ribs, Garrett called for a reverse with Kevin Ogletree. The play goes directly toward Romo, he's trying to get in the way of a defender to give Ogletree some room. He did, but he got knocked down doing it. In the fourth quarter, it seemed Garrett was trying to setup for a field goal, but he used Miles Austin, who was also shaky with his hamstring acting up again, on a run play. Austin lost a yard and fumbled re-injuring the hamstring on the play. The Cowboys have three running backs active. Use one of them, not Austin.
