MOBILE, Ala. -- Cowboys outside linebacker Anthony Spencer will enter free agency March 13 with some uncertainty. The Cowboys valued Spencer's run stopping ability, but wondered why he didn't make a major impact as a pass rusher.

Spencer finished with six sacks, none the last four weeks of the season. When opposing offenses are double-teaming fellow outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, Spencer seemed to disappear.

"He did some real good things," Jerry Jones said Monday afternoon from the Senior Bowl. "He's got a lot of expectations and we could expect a lot but he did some real good things out there for us. He certainly, for me I've seen him do things that were so impressive, let's have him on one side doing those extremely impressive things on every play and Ware of course on the other side doing impressive things. The issue is Ware is Ware."

It's almost unfair to compare Spencer to Ware, who is considered one of the top defensive players in the game. But the Cowboys expected more of a dynamic duo than this.

And while Spencer is playing more pass coverage, by dropping back, he was credited with one pass breakup in 2011 and has 10 for his career. Ware had two last season to go along with 19.5 sacks.

Spencer will hit the open market as a 2007 first-round pick with tremendous potential, but doesn't have the stats to maybe warrant a big money contract. However, a team could give Spencer a huge deal while looking at what he did in the passing game and knowing it's almost unfair to compare him to Ware.

The Cowboys will let Spencer test the market and get a few offers before doing anything. Of course the Cowboys might find Spencer's replacement in the draft or free agency.

The guy is 28 years old.

Time to stop using the word "potential."

I wouldn't give him 10 cents to come back.

All these players who learned under Phillips have that attitude that I can't stand.

The guy is lazy and unmotivated, giving him money is insane. Makes no sense.

only way I'd resign him is to a 1 or 2 yr deal with a bunch of incentives...he definitely wouldnt be handed a starting job..if he's back and he wins it, fine. But he needs to show something more.

You clearly don't watch him play.

Didn't Spencer admit he wasn't always giving 100% effort ??

Sad if true even dumber to admit. It's not like he showed much after saying it either.

I'd move on.

That was a statement he made last season, when no one on our team was giving full effort.. and a statement that people who don't pay attention point to to try and prove that he's a lazy player, when that couldn't be further from the truth if you watch him on the field. Hell, almost all of his sacks this year were a result of continued pursuit. He made several stops in the run game with good pursuit as well, running across the entire field to make a stop or catching a guy from behind on a screen play when his momentum on the rush was taking up upfield in the opposite direction. He doesn't play lazy at all.

If he wins it, then it isn't fine. Means we're still fucked.

I'd have to look up what top OLB's are making, but just an estimate i'd say cap it at 6 million a season. No more. We have far bigger issues to address.

That seems high, IMO. But like you, I'm not real sure what other OLB's are making accross the league.

We payed Sensebaugh 5 mill a year, Spencer is worth more than he is. Its going to be the same deal, owners are going to make stupid decisions with salaries again, they are going to continue to rise more and more until the owners cry foul and bitch that the players are getting too much money.

Time to move on without Spencer. He's not going to get paid what he wants here anyways.

He can be replaced.

He never said that but it was the headline that was used.

What he actually said was he did not give 100% effort during practice on using proper technique and that translated to games, he never once said he slacked off in games but the headline has stuck.

Well set me straight then.

Well for starters Sensabaugh got a $4 million signing bonus. His base salaries are $1 million for 2012, $3 million for 2013, $4 million for 2014, $4 million for 2015 and $6.5 million for 2016.

His cap number for 2012 is $1.8 million.

His base salaries in 2012 and 2013 are guaranteed for injury and become fully guaranteed for that season if he is on the roster on the first day of that league year. That means he'll almost certainly be here for 2012, but we could release him between the end of the 2012 season and the start of the 2013 league year to save cap room, if he isn't worth a $3 million salary for 2013.

But that's just me
