ARLINGTON, Texas -- After the Cowboys gave Jason Garrett the head coaching job full-time, owner/general manager Jerry Jones gave him the power to hire and fire members of the coaching staff.

There are four assistant coaches who's contracts expire after the 2010 season, which includes wide receivers coach Ray Sherman.

Sherman interviewed for the head coaching job that went to Garrett, but he's expressed he wants to remain in Dallas. Sherman is a trusted confidant to several of the players on the roster and Garrett will need to keep him in place.

Finding a new defensive coordinator is going to be tricky.

It seems the Cowboys would like to bring Todd Bowles back to the organization as the defensive coordinator, but he's currently the assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins.

After his interview with the Cowboys on Wednesday, Jones said Bowles was spectacular during his nearly two-hour chat. The Cowboys, due to league rules, can't comment on Bowles regarding being the defensive coordinator, but in private they want him.

However, Bowles could get another job interview as the Rooney Rule candidate or just in general. He could interview for the Miami job as the Rooney Rule guy if Tony Sparano is fired. If that happens it could delay the Cowboys process in getting him.

Several coaches, Hudson Houck (2012) and Joe DeCamillis (2013), are expected to be here awhile. Houck is the highest paid offensive line coach in the league at $1 million a season.

There was rumors Houck was thinking of retirement but he said that's not the case and he enjoys coaching.

With Wade Phillips becoming the defensive coordinator in Houston, it's possible Brett Maxie, who is the safety coach with the Cowboys, might go to Houston. Maxie played for Phillips in New Orleans.

Wes Phillips, Wade Phillips' son, is the Cowboys quality control/offfensive assistant, and he too might leave for the Texans.

Jones and Garrett said there is no timetable regarding how the staff will look.
