By Calvin WatkinsSAN ANTONIO -- Cowboys second-round pick Bruce Carter might be headed to the Physically Unable to Perform list when he's checked out by team officials today.

Carter, who is expected to arrive here today, suffered a knee injury last season while playing for North Carolina. He needed reconstructive surgery which lowered his draft stock among NFL teams. Cowboys' officials projected Carter as a first-round pick and believe the inside linebacker can play a major role once he's healthy.

In April, Dr. James Andrews sent Carter a letter clearing him for football activity, but the Cowboys most likely will be cautious with him.

"It was very frustrating," Carter said back in April of the knee injury. "To not go out and showcase my talents really bothered me a little bit, and I was just out there and trying to cheer everybody on [in college]."

If Carter goes on the PUP list, he will join veteran center Andre Gurode, who had minor knee surgery in late June.

In terms of when Carter can actually sign his contract with the team is uncertain. Carter's agent Carl Carey is still in talks with team officials about a deal.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said he hopes to finalize all the draft picks today, but that could change.

Wouldnt be a huge surprise, he blew out his knee 8-9 months ago.

His biggest contribution will probably be special teams early on anyway, and at some point I'd imagine they'll start working him into to some passing down defenses.
