Dallas Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones has counted on a remarkably loyal fan base to support what has been a medicore club during an extended period. The Cowboys have a .500 record (88-88) with one post-season victory in this century.

That backing may be eroding.

New York-based Brand Keys Inc. has compiled its ``Sports Loyalty'' Index for the 19th year. In February, the research firm surveyed 250 fans in each the market of each team in the four major professional leagues. A club's on-field success was a factor in the final result.

The survey found indications of displeasure with the Cowboys.

New England ranked No. 1 among NFL teams, followed by Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Green Bay and the New York Jets. The Cowboys ranked 21st among the NFL's 32 teams.

The other top-ranked clubs were: Philadelphia (MLB), San Antonio (NBA) and Detroit (NHL). The Mavericks were the only club to crack a top-five. They placed third in the NBA rankings.

How accurate this "Sports Loyalty" index thing is is a mystery, but it's certainly no surpise that Dallas' ranking there is as mediocre as their team. Cowboy fans been remarkably loyal for quite some time considering the clowns that have been put on the field/sidelines, but I wonder if the other shoe will ever drop to where Jones can't just automatically assume that the fans will be there for his team and might actually have to do something to gain and maintain that loyalty?

I don't get the rankings, personally.

I do know that I live in South East VA, Redskins country, and I see as many Pittsburgh and Cowboys stickers, hats, shirts, and other paraphanalia as I do Redskins.
