SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys have signed seven free agents and the financial latitude to make those acquisitions was created, in part, by players such as outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

On Thursday, Ware said he has restructured his contract.

"The process is already finished," Ware explained. "I don't want to get into any numbers or anything like that. It's done. I did whatever I needed to do to help the team."

Ware's cap number is $11.3 million and if the Cowboys cut it by the maximum amount they could reduce the figure to $5.9 million. Along with Ware, wide receiver Miles Austin and quarterback Tony Romo -- who have been awarded some of the heftiest contracts on the team -- are expected to rework their deals.

The team's executive vice president Stephen Jones said earlier in the week that restructuring the contracts is a "work in progress" and that the players involved have been aware of the Cowboys' intentions for a while.

Teams around the league have to be under the $120.4 million salary cap by 3:01 p.m. today.

This should be all we need to get under the cap, but it pushes another $2.7 million onto the 2012 cap. Romo's contract probably won't be touched unless there is absolute need to go it.

Classy move by a classy player.

I was looking at cap numbers and Miles Austin really signed a unique contract. His cap number is $8.54M this year and drops all the way down to $1.15M next year. Plus, he received no signing bonus (he did receive a base of $17M plsu last year) so I don't think there will be any additional cap hit if/when Miles restructures.

Where's it say Jerry is Destitute? I mean everyone knows we were over the cap and that restructuring was gonna happen. Next year if reports are correct will be worse than this as far as thin, but after that, we're good.

Yup. So expect the same scenario in free agency next year. It's the year after where we make a run at it.

Sucks. ware, Romo, Witten, Ratliff will all be two years older, and pushing past or nearing 30 and the downslide.

Times like these are when you find out who on the team is actually committed to winning.

We're lucky to have Ware.

I'm impressed with your attitude on this, Plymkr.

Why?

Anytime a player puts the team before himself. I am all for it.

Not like the greedy little bitch midget in Philly who is sitting out right now.

Reworked Contracts Give Needed Cap Help
Posted by nickeatman at 8/5/2011 9:18 AM CDT on dallascowboys.com

In a last-minute attempt to get under the salary cap, the Cowboys, as expected, have agreed to restructured the contracts of wide receiver Miles Austin and outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware to help them get under the $120.4 million cap.

The Cowboys had this card in their back pocket all along, but only a short window of time to use it.

The opportunity to restructure a few high-priced contracts was always in the plan, but the Cowboys had to wait until 4 p.m. on Thursday, the start of the new league year before restructuring any deals.

And it’s only a 24-hour window as the NFL gives teams until Friday at 4 p.m. before all teams have to be under the cap. Had the Cowboys redone these deals before the deadline, then Ware and Austin would’ve been considered to have “new” contracts and would have to sit out of practice like the other veterans who just returned on Thursday.

According to reports, the Cowboys were anywhere from $4 million to $6 million over the cap heading into Thursday. These two moves have helped the Cowboys get comfortably under the cap. If more space is needed, the Cowboys do have the option of reworking Tony Romo’s deal as well.

Basically what the Cowboys are doing to lower the 2011 cap hit is rolling the player’s base salary this year into a signing bonus that is divided out over the length of the deal. So while this year’s cap charge is lowered, obviously it increases the figures for the following years. While the Cowboys can get themselves into trouble by this practice, the team also banks on the notion the salary cap will likely increase by each year.

For example, if the Cowboys wanted to create more room with a contract of Romo, who is scheduled to count $12.9 million on the cap. His base salary is $9 million along with a $3.962 million proration amount that stems from his original signing bonus. If the Cowboys lowered his base to $3 million and gave him a $6 million bonus to spread out over the last three years of the contract, the money in Romo’s pocket would be the same. But on the cap, Romo’s cap charge would drop from $12.9 to $8.9 giving an obvious savings of $4 million.

That’s just one way to do it and obvious the Cowboys have several creative ways to get around the cap.

I am also not over taking Byron Leftwich instead of Newman. Not to mention we took Mario Edwards over Tom Brady.

Passing on Brady was probably the greatest draft blunder Jerry has made. It is closely followed by not moving up to get Manning.
