Wade Phillips: Rookie Sean Lee not suited to nickel LB role

Soon after the Cowboys took Sean Lee in the second round of the April draft, the team traded Bobby Carpenter. The idea was that Lee would move into Carpenter's role as the nickel linebacker.

It hasn't worked out. Starter Keith Brooking fills the role Carpenter did last season in the nickel defense and Wade Phillips had this to say about Lee Wednesday.

"I don't think he's suited for that position,'' Phillips said. "Not the way we play it, no.''

The snaps Lee gets this season are more likely to come in the team's base defense. That is how the coaching staff can give Brooking an occasional rest.

"I feel comfortable with him (Lee) playing in the game,'' Phillips said. "I think he can go in and play and do well.

"It's just getting him well.''

I just want this kid healthy so I can see what he can bring to the table.

I'd like know who the heck can play the position (nickel LB) on this team...

I'm not excited that old man Brookings is out there.

It's a pretty generic statement.

Ecaxtly why doesn't he fit the nickel?

And how can that be true and yet you would be comfortable with him playing in the game? The nickel's all about pass coverage. This is a pass happy league. If a player doesn't fit the nickel, I don't know if I'd want him on the field. A declining two down vet would be the only exception.

BTW, outstanding scouting at work there.

Hey, let's draft that injury prone white kid from Overrated St.

Wow! A little premature evaluation going on there SBK?

If this was 2013, and the kid played in only 22 games and had 3 starts over 3 years I'd agree with you. But based on 3 regular season games of his rookie campaign... Premature.

I think Lee can play, as soon as he's over these injuries he'll prove it, and then I'll get the praise I deserve for propping this fine young linebacker.

It's the fourth week of his rookie season. His career is far from over.

My money says this guy is going to have a nice career for us.

I'm not afraid to project, Winicki.

I find those who wait and see boring. I hated the pick, he comes from a notoriously overrated bustville school and he's already failed his first assignment. He was supposed to be the nickel backer this year.

And we had this bum rated top 20 overall on our board. If Bryant's off the board and we don't trade down, he'd have been our 1st round pick.

You're certainly free to project... but that's all it is at this point a projection.

I don't know if he was penciled in at the nickel MLB spot from day he was drafted. I don't know if those plans were ever shared by the Cowboy's hierarchy. I would have thought Jason Williams would have been the initial choice.

Pencil me as the guy that says Sean Lee will be a multi-year starter on our defense, a defensive leader on our team, and lead the team in tackles for multiple seasons.

When Quincy Carter played his first three games in the league all the talk that he was a bum was a mere projection at that point.

Spare me the homer nonsense to protect a shat player. I don't need to wait and see before forming an opinion.

And you would have thought wrong on the nickel job. They even said as much after he was drafted. He factored in this year. Their words. Not mine.

Except now he doesn't. Because he's a white injury prone bum from Bust St.

You're basing your "opinion" on ignorance and prejudice.

Shocking.

My aren't we negative today? :)

Quincy Carter was totally different story... A 4th round pick that went in the 2nd round. Also a different coaching regime back then.

"Factoring in the nickel" is different than coming right out and saying, "This Lee kid is going to be our nickel MLB this upcoming season"-Wade Phillips

I stick to my original thought that the Williams kid was the original choice for the nickel MLB role.

Lee was hurt for much of training camp. Tough to learn when you're on the sidelines.

By the by, if I had to select a college that consistently put out over-rated players, the top dog would be Ohio St.

No coach is ever gonna come out and say this guy we just drafted will be anything. It's too definitive. They don't talk like that.

But they did say they expect him to play this year. Your fake GM even said he'd be surprised if he didn't.

Well, he's not. And it's not because he's doing well since he's been here.

Give the situation some time SBK. :)
