Fired Cowboys coach reacts: 'It doesn't absolve everything, but it was a win'

Former Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips - only a week after being fired - was full of praise Monday for the team getting its second win of the season.

"I'm so proud of the guys, and I'm talking about my coaches and all my players," he said in an interview after a charity breakfast.

Phillips, who was beaming at the performance, said he watched the victory over the New York Giants at his home, adding "No, I didn't go to New York."

"We needed a win," he said. "It doesn't absolve everything, but it was a win. And that's what's great about football."

The coach received a standing ovation Monday morning when introduced at the Chemical Awareness Resource and Education community breakfast. CARE is an advocacy group of the Park Cities YMCA.

Phillips and his wife, who are heavily involved in charity work, were among those attending to hear actor John Larroquette speak about being sober since 1982.

Larroquette, a New Orleans native, congratulated Cowboys fans, but said they should "get that victory out of your system" before Dallas meets his New Orleans Saints on Thanksgiving Day

"I know how it feels to have a less-than-stellar season - like 40 of them," Larroquette said.
