Former Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Monday that his career as a head coach is probably over.
Philllips, fired after the Cowboys' 1-7 start, was hired by the Houston Texans as defensive coordinator last Wednesday.Texans coach Gary Kubiak fired defensive coordinator Frank Bush and three other defensive assistants.
Phillips was introduced to the media on Monday at Texans headquarters.
Phillips has a career record of 82-61. But he said his playoff record (1-5) and his mid-season season demise with the Cowboys, who had high expectations after going 11-5 last season, has likely ended his head coaching possibilities.
``It's perception sometimes more than reality in that I've won a lot of games in this league and have a real high winning percentage,'' Phillips said. ``But I don't see me being the head coach again because of the perception overall.''
Asked what he thinks is the public's perception, Phillips said:
"When you get fired, it's usually, 'Hey, he was fired because he can't win.' Well, it wasn't because I couldn't win, maybe couldn't win enough. I didn't win enough at Buffalo. I didn't win enough at (Dallas). You know, 34-22, or whatever it was, a lot of people would take as head coach, but that's the way it is."
Phillips has some work to in Houston. The Texans lost eight of their last 10 games in 2010. Their defense ranked 30th in the NFL, 32nd against the pass.
Houston wanted an experienced coordinator to turn things around. Phillips has been with eight NFL teams. When Phillips was fired in Dallas, the Cowboys had the NFC's worst scoring defense. They allowed 27.2 points per game, the highest average in more than 20 seasons.
Phillips plans to implement the 3-4 scheme he has used extensively over his 29-year coaching career. The Texans have used the 4-3 scheme in Kubiak's five seasons.
``I've been successful playing in a 3-4 for a long time,'' he said. ``I've gone into situations where they played 4-3 before and we've been successful very quickly. All it is, is your front seven. The coverages are all the same, whether you're in the 4-3 or 3-4. We had problems in coverage here. That really doesn't affect the coverage. What I think you get more in a 3-4, and I think our record bears it out, that you get more pressure in a 3-4 and that should help your back end."
