The Cowboys are off to their worst start in 21 years.
San Francisco and Buffalo are the only NFL teams that look up to the Cowboys 1-5 record.
The starting quarterback is likely out for two months and other key players are hurt.
How does head coach Wade Phillips convince his players there is hope?
"That's what you do,'' Phillips said. "That's what coaching is. That's what playing is.
"You know, you didn't sign up to say only if things go good, I'm going to coach or I'm going to play. You signed up for the whole deal.
"We're not going to stop right now and give up or quit or whine or even make excuses. You've just got to go forward. That's what we have to do.''
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett echoed a similar theme on his way out of the locker room Monday night when asked how this team retains an optimistic outlook.
"I think the biggest thing you do is wake up in the morning and go back to work,'' Garrett said. "It's a long season. We've got a lot of football ahead of us.
"The biggest thing we need to do is focus on improving. This team will stay together, this team will work hard.''
As Phillips said, it's what they do.
"I think our guys will band together,'' Phillips said. "We have a good group of guys. I do feel bad for them. I think they've tried to do all the things we've asked.
"We'll keep doing it.'
