In 2008, the Cowboys turned to Brad Johnson when Tony Romo suffered a fractured pinky finger.

The Cowboys went 1-2 and Johnson had just two touchdowns and five interceptions. His high-water game was 234 yards against St. Louis, his first start. He threw for 122 yards in the win vs. Tampa Bay and just 71 yards against the Giants before getting pulled in favor of Brooks Bollinger.

Jon Kitna, to Wade Phillips, is no Brad Johnson.

"I think this guy can throw the football," Phillips said. "He can be effective throwing the football. He can throw it a long ways. He can throw the deep ball. He can throw the quick slants. He's got some zip on the ball. He can get it to the receivers and that's important for us."

Johnson really couldn't do that and the Cowboys are hoping Kitna's two-plus quarters of work Monday and a full week of practice will help him be more ready this week vs. Jacksonville.

"You can do a lot of things with Tony because you can say, 'Hey, we are going to run this one play, and if they are in this one coverage we can do this,'" Phillips said. "With Jon, you've got to say, 'Hey, these are the things you run in training camp,' that kind of thing. It's a little bit different. But you can still do a lot of things. He's a veteran quarterback. It's not like he's going to be a Simple Simon game plan now."
