Undoubtedly the National Football League is king, but a Dallas Cowboys legend thinks trouble may be coming.

Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, the lead analyst on the NFL on Fox, told a Los Angeles forum last Friday he feels the wildly popular sport may be in jeopardy.

"The long-term viability, to me anyway, is somewhat in question as far as what this game is going to look like 20 years from now," Aikman said.

The Super Bowl XXVII MVP said the NFL Network's struggles should be a red flag to owners: "People couldn't get [the channel] in the homes and, all of sudden, fans, me included, were saying, 'I wasn't getting the Thursday night game and I was OK with that.' That’s not a good thing."

Aikman spoke of his worry about the dilution of a product that is currently wildly popular.

"At one time, watching football was an event," Aikman said. "'Monday Night Football' was a big event. Now you get football Sunday, you get it Monday, you get it Thursday and, late in the year, you get it on Saturday."

Aikman did not mention which sport might end up passing football in popularity.

"I think we’re going to look back at this point in time and say these were the missteps that the National Football League took that kept football from being the No. 1 sport," Aikman said, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. "I believe, and this is my opinion, that at some point football is not going to be the number one sport. You talk about the ebbs and flows of what’s popular and what’s not. At some point, the TV ratings are not going to be there. I can’t justify that because the numbers say otherwise (now), but I guess time will tell."

Aikman debuted with the Cowboys in 1989, playing until 2000 in a career that included six Pro Bowl births and three Super Bowl championships alongside Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. The former UCLA quarterback passed for 32,942 yards and 165 touchdowns during his pro career. He ended up the winningest starting quarterback of any decade with 90 of 94 career wins occurring in 1990s.

The Cowboys great also mentioned his concern about concussions, and whether anything can be done to remedy a situation that doesn't seem to be getting any better with increased research.

Aikman said if he had a son, "I don’t know if I would be encouraging him to play.

I agree and this is not new with Troy.

He has been talking about all the changes especially the schedule for a long time and the inclusion of the NFL network and also the draft changes as negatives.

I have heard him say it for the longest time that the season needs to end and just be out of the spotlight for awhile like it used to be and I couldn't agree more.

Always leave em wanting more.

And it's true, a few years back it was all baseball and boxing. Boxing went to pay per view and baseball just sucks.

Totally agree. He didnt say it, but the guy running the show is ruining the best sport each day he has his hands in it.

Goodell is the worst thing thats ever happened to the NFL.

He is bad but the reality is he is basically just the mouthpiece of the owners. He does what they want, he gets paid a ton and takes the hits when things go bad.

So if you dislike him u should have beef with the owners, there greed is the real problem.

I think the league will be alright if the season stays at 16 games. Baseball and Basketball's downfall sprung from the fact that their seasons are so drawn out that noone really cares about either league until their playoffs. And then just barely.

Nah, easier to irrationally channel your hatred to one man. Distributing blame among the owners takes not only time but effort.

You know what happened before Thursday night games and games where played outside of my local market, I didn't get the game.

In fact, there were a bunch of games I didn't get each week.

The Thursday night games have replaced the great Saturday afternoon games that were on in all markets.

Used to be two saturday games and they were by luck or whatever good important games in December...now they are on Thursday and Saturday nights.

The Thursday night games are bad for the league in every capacity except one, tv ad revenue.

i agree with the nfl could be in trouble but it has nothing to do with overexposure. The game is being ruined by the rules. You cant hit Qbs or Wrs anymore. Teams are converting 3rd and longs like 3rd and inches. Why because theres a 70% chance of a def penalty now.

The NFL is king right now because of two things:

1. Sports betting
2. Fantasy football

It's a great sport, but without those two things, ratings would be down accross the board.

But yeah, it's not going to remain on top forever. Just like Boxing & Baseball, something else will take it's place eventually.

And I honestly haven't met a single fan who likes any of the changes that Goodell has either implemented, or is considering implementing - aside from the 18 game schedule, I do know some people who'd like that.

You're saying that there will only be 1 game per station on Sundays?

No they have this god awful channel that shows you parts of every live game. There's so much going on they often go picture-in-picture.

Holy shit.
Do you know something you're not telling us?
Cause there's some stuff on my bucket list that require a post apocalyptic society to pull off.

Why i hate Aikman. He just doesn’t enjoy the NFL like many other fans. I could watch football every fucking day and not miss a game. The offseason is so long and boring you have to savor each game. Aikman is a baseball fan, maybe he thinks that boring shit will overtake football.

Other sports have the same thing. Fucking fantasy baseball is being played.

Aikman is correct here. There were some Thursday night, Monday night and even Sunday night games that I could not have given two shits about this season. They need to either flex schedule from week 1, or just stop with all these dumb games. Nobody wants to watch teams like Jacksonville, Cleveland, and Seattle play. They put Indy in a few primetime games before they knew that Peyton would be out.

They should have flexed out of all that nonsense. There aren't enough solid games each week to merit having a Thursday/Monday night game really.
