Two-a-days at training camp apparently are on the way out.

As a key concession to the players in the negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, NFL owners have agreed for health and safety reasons to do away with the double workouts, according to ESPN.

“Teams will be allowed to have some helmetless and padless, non-contact walk-through practices in lieu of a second training camp practice on the same day,” ESPN reported.

That means if the Cowboys have training camp as planned at the Alamodome next week, fans will have fewer opportunities to see the players in action and fewer opportunities to attempt to gather autographs.

But on the positive side, players will have fewer opportunities to get injured. That’s important because practicing on the artificial surface at the Alamodome can be tough on the players’ knees, especially those of skill position players.

The removal of padded two-a-day will no doubt be a disappointment to Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, who worked hard during his interim stint last season to improve the team’s toughness.

Of course, all this hinges on the owners and players approving the new CBA next week.

Yeah that sux some, but under Wade the walk through type practices were pretty much the norm. At least under Garrett we know we'll be getting at least some physical/Jimmy style camp practices in.

It's all about attitude though, and I think that is what Garrett will bring.

I'm actually indifferent on this.

Two-a-days were designed to get guys in shape for the season. Guys who worked 2nd jobs during the off season. I don't think guys need that anymore. These guys are professional atheletes and I think they stay in shape year 'round.

Well, let's hope and see what Woicik will do with them on the conditioning, I think this may prove to be one of our better acquisitions during the offseason.

mixed emotions about this.

first you can get hurt at anytime, being fatigued during a second practice probably creates sloppiness and contributes but I dont know that for certain.

second, two a days and tough physical grueling practices have always been used as a means of weeding guys out, finding the guys who dont want to work and who do not want it as bad. Its a philosophy on molding a team as much as increasing the fitness level of the players. I really think not having the two a days could be a negative in that aspect.

third, I am pretty confident garrett, robinson and ryan are not going to run sloppy, slow or lazy practices so I dont think this is that much of an issue. Maybe not being so fatigued during two a days will help the defensive players learn the defense in the classroom quicker.

But it doesn't really matter. Everyone has to play by the same rules. I don't think two-a-days in the NFL go exactly like they go in high school camp anyhow, I think one of the practices is generally alot less intense.
