ARLINGTON, Texas – The details will determine whether Dez Bryant reaches his immense potential.
There is zero doubt whether Bryant has the talent to develop into an elite receiver. He has a rare combination of size, speed, explosiveness, quickness, hands and acrobatic ability. He’s capable of making the spectacular play at any time.
Will Bryant be capable of making the simple play on a consistent basis? Will Tony Romo be able to rely on Bryant to run the exactly right route on third down?
Bryant might have had a hiccup on the final play of the first-team offense’s only drive in the preseason opener. With the Broncos blitzing and Bryant one-on-one with a cornerback, it appeared to be a situation that called for Bryant to run a hot route, although Bryant said after the game that wasn’t the case. Romo’s hurried throw to Bryant on a comeback route fell short, forcing the Cowboys to settle for a field goal.
Right or wrong, that was only one play. Romo has been encouraged by Bryant’s development since he’s recovered from ankle surgery, including the second-year receiver’s work at player-run offseason workouts and during training camp.
“He’s done good. He comes to work every day,” Romo said. “He wants to be a really, really great receiver and I think it shows when he’s out here. The details [are] what really allows you to take that next step. He’s doing a really good job of that. He just needs to keep doing it and the sky’s the limit.”
