In regards to Romo, this is courtesy of PercyHoward at CZ:

Romo led the league in QB rating, yds per attempt, completion % and TD %. Its only happened 6 times in the last 38 yrs and all 6 of those QB's won the league MVP. The other 6:

2007 Brady
2001 Warner
1999 Warner
1994 Young
1992 Young
1989 Montana

And you could have had this type of production for years. Ignoring the holes in the offensive line, Jerry has mentioned a few times that he gave Romo weapons instead of investing in a better line, so fucking stupid, couple that with the cause and effect of having stiffs on the line, they only had a gimmick running game for his entire career.

So many potentially great years have been pissed away by this organization. Could have been a 2-3 Super Bowl career for this guy. I hope he gets his one SB and gets his HOF bid. He deserves a hell of a lot more respect than he gets, especially from this stupid fan base.

#Cowboys Tony Romo is the first quarterback since Tom Brady in 2007 to lead the NFL in both completion percentage and yards per attempt.

Right. And the OL fail was even worse than you mentioned. The front office purposely dismantled a marginal OL and replaced it with something even worse. And then, finally, the team decided to start using premium picks to address the glaring weakness.

Jerry believed and even said publicly that because Romo was elusive, the team didn't need a strong OL.

But somehow we still were able to average well over 4 yards a carry with several different RBs over this time. Just, never bothered to make a habit and insist on running the ball.

Any OL is going to look alot worse than it is, if you have them in defensive mode, pass protecting most of the time. They don't "click" unless you keep them in attack mode, running the ball alot. Habitually nasty. That's how the 90s line worked - without a single #1 draft pick anywhere in it.

Did you watch games or read stat lines on nfl.com?

Those lines were weak. They could get no push. Draws, delays, fake reverse handoffs. No in line running worth a shit. The run game was smoke and mirrors.

They got zero push in the run game. I bet they averaged 0.5 yards on 3rd and short runs for like 3 years straight. It was the worst run blocking line in the nfl for at least 3 years.

Now ow we have a line, probably one of, if not the best in the league. You're seeing the benefits week in and week out now. Tony has time, Murray has holes to run through.

Agree. If you can't see the difference in the line now, you're blind. And Clutts has been a nice little FB

Speaking of Clutts. Dude was a monster pass-rusher in college. Had 23.5 sacks at Fresno State.

My wife went to high school with Clutts. I know because she mentions it every single time that fuckers name comes up in the broadcast.

It wasn't that the Cowboys were an above average running team that didn't run enough. They were a team that "took what the defense gave them." The Cowboys were not capable of running well vs. defenses that were stacked against the run.

Now they can.

Everything above are symptoms of what I said. Same issues exist for every team all throughout history that was pass first. They couldn't run the ball not because of bad linemen, but because it wasn't habit.

Ever heard of Joe Bugel? He was the first to espouse this philosophy and it's been proven true time and again.

The Dallas line of those years wasn't good. But it wasn't anywhere near as terrible as it looked, or what people think. They simply didn't know how to attack. Because it wasn't practiced, it wasn't habit.

It's more a product of the priority than it is just the personnel. A good example of what I am talking about is Nate newton. Tex Schramm told jerry and Jimmy not to bother with him. He said Nate was lazy, not aggressive, and wasn't effective. Well, what changed?

Attack habit for offensive linemen, that's what.
The Cowboys were not capable of running well vs. defenses that were stacked against the run.
Because it wasn't taught, wasn't practiced, wasn't expected, wasn't a priority.
