Titus Young arrested on burglary, assault charges

Posted by Mike Wilkening on May 12, 2013, 2:40 PM EDT

Former Lions wide receiver Titus Young has again run into off-field trouble.

Young was arrested this weekend in San Clemente, Calif. on charges of burglary, assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest, Lt. Joe Balicki of Orange County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to PFT on Sunday afternoon.

Young is currently being held on $75,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned on Monday, Balicki said. The burglary and assault charges are felonies, Balicki said, with the resisting arrest charge a misdemeanor.

According to Balicki, the incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night when a homeowner contacted authorities alleging someone was inside her home. When sheriff’s officers arrived, they found Young outside the home, Balicki said. According to Balicki, Young ran away from officers. After a “brief” pursuit on foot, there was a “physical altercation,” Balicki said, with Young alleged to have fought officers before being taken into custody. Neither Young nor officers were hurt, Balicki said.

Earlier in the week, the 23-year-old Young was arrested on DUI and burglary charges.

Young showed promise in two seasons with the Lions, but the club released him in February. The Rams picked him up, but he lasted just 10 days with St. Louis. In his last game with the Lions, he is alleged to have lined up wrong on purpose, and the club essentially twice banished him after the incident.

The Detroit News first reported news of Young’s latest arrest earlier Sunday.

He also had his car impounded and then got arrested again later that day trying to steal his car out of impound.

He's officially done. Arena League maybe but no one in the NFL is touching this guy.

He's a really talented guy too. He could've been very good in this league.

There has to be some sort of mental condition there, no?

Clearly he uses poor judgment.

A mental condition? Some diagnoses are alternative ways of saying that someone exercises poor judgment.

His dad says so. I read an article where his dad said that Titus hasn't been the same since he suffered a concussion his rookie season.

Said he's always been temperamental but he's "different" now. Perhaps he's bipolar and he's just cycling right now or has been since the concussion.

Also said that they've had him on meds and he hasn't been taking them lately. Was supposedly visiting and said he was going to get his phone from his car......sped the fuck off and ended up in jail later.

Mother of Titus Young’s son gets restraining order

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 16, 2013, 5:57 PM EDT

As the life of former Lions receiver Titus Young continues to spiral out of control, his ex-girlfriend has obtained a restraining order to prevent him from having any contact with her or their son.

The restraining order was filed in Riverside County, California, Superior Court on May 8, the day after Young was arrested twice in one day in Moreno Valley, California.

“Titus Young Sr. has been clinically diagnosed with a mental disorder and I am afraid of what he is capable of doing,” the ex-girlfriend wrote in court documents, according to the Press-Enterprise. “He also has been in a mental help facility more than once and still believes that he does not have a problem.”

The ex-girlfriend filed a report saying Young had been threatening and harassing her.

“He would say things like, ‘I understand why O.J. killed his wife,’” she wrote. “He got mad and yelled at my neighbors and tried to fight multiple people that he doesn’t even know.”

Young’s repeated off-field problems got him cut by the Lions early this year, and he has been in repeated legal trouble in recent weeks. The ex-girlfriend says people close to him know he needs mental health treatment, but he refuses help.

Titus Young appears in court, refuses to address judge

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 24, 2013, 4:00 PM EDT

AP
Titus Young, the troubled former Lions receiver who has been arrested three times this month and has been in jail since May 11, appeared in court today but refused to address the judge.

According to USA Today, the interaction between Young and Judge Andre Manssourian went like this:

Judge: “Good morning, sir.”

Young: No reply.

Judge: “Can you hear me?”

Young: No reply.

Judge: “Are you Titus Demetrius Young?”

Young: No reply.

When Young refused to even confirm his name, the judge called the attorneys over and had a sidebar discussion with them, during which time Young continued to stand silently. At one point Young’s father, who was in the courtroom, called out to him, but Young still did not respond. Young’s attorney later said that Young was exercising his right to remain silent.

Friends and family members have said they’re concerned about the mental state of Young, who is facing a slew of charges including burglary, battery on a police officer and drunk driving. The judge said Young “poses a danger to the community” and increased his bail from $25,000 to $50,000. Young’s family has apparently decided not to post bail, thinking he is better off remaining in jail until he receives the mental health treatment he needs.

Medication might make a world of difference to this kid. He is clearly unbalanced.

What good does it do to not respond to the judge? All you are doing is pissing off the person who decides your fate.

It actually might be a brilliant, though unintended ploy. Although it's only in front of an arraignment judge; but if the case does go before this judge, there could be some sort of doubt of bias ie 'insulting' the judge by not speaking to him, coming into play.
