Tiki Barber returning to NFL

Your team may be painful to watch, but these cheerleaders are easy on the eyes.
Tiki Barber and his agent told FOXSports.com Tuesday that the former Giants running back has decided to return to the NFL.

"After seeing my brother still have fun at our age, it reignited the fire. I'm really looking forward to the challenge of seeing if I can get back to the level of where I was," Barber, who turns 36 in April, told FOXSports.com exclusively. "I started working out again recently. It kind of shocked myself. I still had a lot of the strength I had before. I'm really looking forward to making a return."

Barber played 10 seasons, all with the Giants. He retired after the 2006 season when he rushed for 1,662 yards. In his final three seasons, Barber ran for 5,040 yards.

"We filed papers for Tiki to come out of retirement" Barber’s agent, Mark Lepselter, told FOXSports.com. "We filed papers with the commmissioner's office and the Giants. And there are interested parties."

The Giants now have to activate him and then decide whether to release or keep him.

During his time away from the field, Barber served as an NFL broadcast analyst and a correspondent for NBC's "Today" show.

Giants still hold Tiki’s rights

Posted by Mike Florio on March 8, 2011, 2:55 PM EST
When running back Tiki Barber retired after the 2006 season, he had time left on his contract. He was placed on — and he remains on — the Giants’ reserve/retired list.

Team spokesman Pat Hanlon tells us that, indeed, the Giants still hold Barber’s rights.

This detail confirms that the “interested parties” to which agent Mark Lepselter referred when speaking to FOX’s Jay Glazer have technically tampered with Tiki, unless the term “interested parties” refers to multiple members of the Giants’ organization.

And before anyone scoffs, keep one thing in mind. Tiki’s intent to return to the NFL provides us all with a welcome break from the lockout talk.

Good call. There's a pretty healthy market for average 36 year old running backs that haven't played in 5 seasons.

Fun fact: Tiki's full name is Atiim Kiambu Hakeem-Ah Herman Barber.

Ronde “reignited the fire” for Tiki

So why is running back Tiki Barber returning to the NFL?

“After seeing my brother [Ronde Barber] still have fun at our age, it reignited the fire. I’m really looking forward to the challenge of seeing if I can get back to the level of where I was,” Barber told Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com. “I started working out again recently. It kind of shocked myself. I still had a lot of the strength I had before. I’m really looking forward to making a return.”

Many will assume that Barber’s financial obligations — and lack of network TV money — has fueled his desire to squeeze the last few drops of physical ability out of his muscles, bones, and connective tissues. If things go well, it could also provide him with an off-field bump, paving the way for an appearance on Dancing with the Stars and generally positioning him for #winning.

Newsday's Bob Glauber reports the Giants will set Tiki Barber free once he's reinstated by the NFL.

As expected. Tiki heavily criticized coach Tom Coughlin in his first season as an NBC analyst while also accusing the coach of "robbing" him of "the joy" of football in his 2007 book. ESPN's Adam Schefter speculates that John Fox's Broncos, Sean Payton's Saints, and Raheem Morris' Bucs could take a long look at Barber. Fox and Payton were on the Giants staff early in Barber's career. Tiki's twin brother is a virtual player-coach in Tampa

His media career fizzled and he supposedly made some bad business decisions.
