The Biden administration was putting pressure on railroads and unions Wednesday to settle their differences and avert a strike. But just in case that doesn’t work, the administration was also working on a plan to use trucks and planes to move goods that are normally carried by freight railroads.

Bty, the negotiations between the unions and the companies for these work rules is not an all of a sudden thing. These have been going on for over 2 years.

Has anyone calculated how much this deal will cost the railroads? The one time bonus, or retroactive wage increases, alone will cost around $1.265 billion. The 24% wage increase on top of that will cost another $2 billion over 2 years, and add $2 billion to railroad costs every year after that.
Why does this matter? It matters because railroads are not going to absorb these extra expenses. There will be job cuts and fee increases. It will cost more to ship good by rail which will increase the price of goods which will lead to more inflation. These costs will be passed along to consumers and businesses that consume resources shipped by rail. One industry that will be hit hard is the petroleum industry. We will see increases in gas and heating oil prices.
If Biden is going to take credit for this deal, just hold that thought because by 2024 the effect of this deal will be hitting our wallets pretty hard.

This railway deal may help avert a disastrous strike in the short term, but it will cost the railroad industry $3 million over the next 2 years and another $2 billion every year after that. The railroad are not going to take that money out of earnings, they are going to lay off workers, cut other expenses and pass the rest off as transport rate fee increases. We will all pay for his deal with higher prices on goods and more inflation that will erode our savings. Joe Biden is taking credit now but I bet when the impact of this deal hits consumers he will be nowhere to be found, and Karine Jean-Pierre will be blaming Trump or Putin.
