The Jason Garrett legend grows with second win

Jason Garrett’s first win as a head coach was greeted with copious amounts of praise from all corners for the way he changed the culture around the Cowboys.
It seemed a bit too quick for such massive amounts of change to take hold but we’re starting to believe that Garrett has found the right buttons to push. His team didn’t race out to a big lead this week, they trailed 12-7 in the third quarter in fact, but they still didn’t fold and wound up winning comfortably 35-19 against the Lions. It’s the first home win of the season for the Cowboys and the second big argument Garrett has made for keeping his job on a permanent basis.
The play that probably best exemplifies how different the Cowboys have looked over the last two weeks was probably Bryan McCann‘s 97-yard punt return for a touchdown after a Lions player knocked the ball back into the field of play was the kind of heads-up, effort play that was totally absent before Wade Phillips got fired. We’re cautious about attributing all of that to Garrett, but it is certainly indicative of the way the entire team has looked since he took over.
The other big change in Dallas has come on defense where the Cowboys have suddenly become takeaway happy after rarely forcing turnovers under Phillips. Sean Lee forced a fumble, Terence Newman had an interception and an attack less focused on the blitz still came up with three sacks of Shaun Hill.
Garrett won’t have much time to rest on his laurels as the Saints will be in Dallas on Thursday afternoon. They won’t be favored, but the line’s gonna be a lot smaller than anyone would have predicted two Sundays ago.
