Alright, we've had a lifetime to think about it before today. Here's what I believe the Cowboys' wishlist is for pick No. 9 heading into the first round of the NFL Draft.
1. Nick Fairley
2. Tyron Smith
3. Trade Down
Talk in recent days is that Fairley could be dropping based on a number of things - that he was a one-year wonder at Auburn, that his work ethic may be an issue and he's also been smacked with the always nebulous "character concerns" label. However, he appears to have the potential to truly disrupt offenses in a way the Cowboys haven't gotten from their ends since switching to the 3-4 defense.
As for Smith, there's a good chance the Cowboys see him as the best offensive tackle in the draft. They haven't picked an O-lineman in the first round in 30 years, but there is reason to believe that could change. The Cowboys haven't picked this early since 2003, so the chance to select an elite player would certainly be enticing.
However, it's been pointed out that this would be only the second time in 10 years that the first lineman taken wasn't gone in the first eight picks, so there's a better-than-zero chance Smith will be gone before the Cowboys pick. Beyond him, there seems to be a range of players the Cowboys could use, and a trade down would allow them to stockpile multiple picks, which is also appealing.
We'll see how it shakes out tonight, but this is my gut feeling about what the Cowboys would like to see happen.
