Cowboys could target Texas CB Aaron Williams or Illinios RB Mikel Leshoure at top of the second round

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wouldn’t give up any names but he said the team has plenty of positions it could fill with their second and third round picks on Friday.

The Cowboys have obvious needs at defensive end, safety, linebacker and cornerback. But Jones continues to beat the drum for a running back.

If the Cowboys draft a running back, Marion Barber is good as gone like Marc Colombo.

“We certainly have needs between defensive line, linebacker and at corner and safety so they are there,” Jones said. “ Again I wouldn’t dismiss if we see an opportunity at running back, but we have wanted our third running back to be a special teams player and we haven’t had that. That is a goal. We’ve got a legitimate way to put the snaps on a running back at any of these second to the fifth round. We are not quite the perfect fit there (running back) because we don’t have the special teams player. A lot of that also depends on some of the decisions we make with the veterans. But it is enough that we spent a lot of time talking about running backs.”

Two players to keep an eye on at the top of the second round when the Cowboys pick at No. 40 are Texas cornerback Aaron Williams and Illinois running back Mikel Leshoure.

I would be a happy camper if we got Williams at 40. Mikel not so much, as I feel our secondary is the greater need at this point.

You lost me on the we should draft for greater need thing.

If it's a choice between the two you mentioned, I would rather have Williams, as our secondary getting better is the greater need.

I'll take the best player. And not give a second of thought to need. Unless, of course, you have the same grade on the players.

Didn't know Tyron Smith could play three OL positions.

Williams is rated higher on my board and he fills a better need.....

What's scary is when our GM was asked about the team's plans for Friday, he mentioned a 3rd RB who can play special teams. "We haven't had that. That's a goal."

Whoa. Lower that bar a little for a 2nd or 3rd round pick. A guy who can play special teams? That's dreaming.

There really isn't a RB who looks like a good special teamer in this draft. Certainly not one whose special teams ability warrants such a high selection.
