The Houston Texans are a complete and utter embarrassment to professional sports in Houston. A very unfortunate situation for a good guy like Gary Kubiak to wake up to on Monday morning; the morning after the Texans most embarrassing loss of the season. That loss, a 24-23 defeat by the then 3-11 Denver Broncos, was spurred by a resilient Tim Tebow who led his team back from a 17-0 deficit.
I must admit that I’m a big fan of SEC Football and in the 2nd half of the Texans @ Broncos on Sunday; I swore I was watching SEC Football as the Broncos OC, Mike McCoy seemed to mimic what Tebow was familiar with and the Broncos offensive set looked more like that of the Florida Gators. And yet the Texans defense were powerless to stop it, allowing Tebow and the Broncos to take a 24-23 lead very late in the 4th quarter.
But hold your horses before you plant all the blame squarely on the Texans defense. Kubiak and Schaub’s vaunted offense were able to muscle up only 2 Neil Rackers field goals for a total of 6 second half points. While impressive those Rackers’ field goals were, the Texans play calling and executions of the offense in the 3rd & 4th quarter were atrocious at best.
The demise of the Texans has the media hitting the Houston brass very hard; calling for the head of everyone in a management, or a coaching position. The intense scrutiny put on the Texans from the media, and now the fans have prompted some true colors to appear. (For example), Monday morning on Matt Schaub’s radio show on Sports Radio 610, the Texans QB lashed out at a Texans fan caller exclaiming; when asked (if the Texans had a scouting report on Denver D-Line); “You know nothing about football that’s for sure” An innocent question from a Texans fan. Many, myself included, call that an attack on your fan base. When a professional athlete attacks the fan base; he’s a loser plain and simple!
With the Texans chain of command a complete mystery (officially) it’s very obvious to me that the tail wags the dog in this organization. Be that as it may, the Texans have chosen to connect Smith and Kubiac at the hip and shield either from taking the heat from their adolescent mistakes at the helm of one of professional sports’ most prized franchises. Those two have culminated a horrific 36-43 record over 5 years and not even a sniff of post season play. They have botched draft picks, one after another, all the while selling it to the Houston fan base; who so badly wanted a winner, they were blinded by the PR coming out of the Texans machine.
As that Texans fan base awoke on Monday morning, the once blind loyalty has completely disappeared. Replaced by an angry fan base that wants no more excuses, no more PR, but rather are screaming for dramatic change in Texans management. The mood of the angry mob is much more spirited and has taken on a stronger tone, if you will, than that of those who presided over the expulsion of Charlie Casserly, and Dom Capers. As the Texans prepare for their final contest of the season when the Jacksonville Jaguars come calling; there is a ‘Who Cares” attitude throughout the media and fan base. Many in the media think the Kubiak regime should be terminated immediately; one even calling it the humane thing to do, but Bob McNair is likely to retain his underlings for at least one more week.
No matter the results of the Texans vs. Jaguars game, there are wholesale changes on the way, or at least there better be if McNair and the Texans don’t want to lose this town, only 9 years into the franchise. Sure there are always those die-hards that are there no matter what; but the working mans buck is the buck the Texans must retain. The working mans buck is the one that gets all of the advertisers attention and the one that will ultimately count in the end.
