Texans must keep Matthews, congrats to Gray
Bruce Matthews is an institution in Houston, and the Texans can't let him get away, especially to the Cowboys.

And congratulations to Jerry Gray, the Longhorns' new assistant head coach/defensive backs coach. What a great move by Mack Brown. Gray is an outstanding coach who has wanted to return to the Longhorns for years. He finally got his wish. Not only will Gray do an outstanding job of coaching, but he'll be an exceptional recruiter, too.
Gray was a first-round pick and Pro Bowl cornerback with the Rams. He finished his playing career with the Oilers and began his coaching career with the Oilers. He's also been a respected assistant with the Titans, Bills, Redskins and Seahawks.
Gray and Matthews were teammates with the Oilers. Both made the move to Tennessee in 1996.
Matthews, who was the Oilers' first-round pick in 1983 and played 14 seasons in Houston, represents everything that's good and professional about football players. He's a Houston institution. The Texans — not to mention the league — need more like him on the field and on the coaching staff.
For the last two seasons, Matthews has been working with the offensive linemen, first under Alex Gibbs and last season under John Benton. The linemen like and respect Matthews, who got more responsibility this past season.
Matthews interviewed with the Cowboys on Monday. They're looking for an assistant offensive line coach to work with Hudson Houck, who is one of the all-time great line coaches. Matthews would learn a lot, but the Texans have to do everything they can to keep him.
Meanwhile, expect the Texans to hire Cowboys linebackers coach Reggie Herring. He's expected to interview with coach Gary Kubiak on Tuesday.
Herring was with the Texans in 2002-03 under Dom Capers. He worked under Wade Phillips at Dallas. He's been Phillips' first choice to coach the Texans' linebackers.
The Cowboys originally denied permission for the Texans to interview Herring. They wanted to wait until they hired their new defensive coordinator and see if he had a linebackers coach he wanted to bring to the Cowboys. Obviously, Rob Ryan has somebody else in mind, or the Texans wouldn't be able to interview Herring this week.
Once Herring is hired, the defensive staff will be complete except perhaps for an assistant linebackers coach.
