Clearly, Jerry Jones has been thinking about firing Wade Phillips for a couple of weeks. He just can't figure out how to do it.
So Jerry has decided – unless the Cowboys get blown out by Green Bay on Sunday – to end all of the speculation and embarrassment for Phillips that accompanies the never-ending string of questions about his job status by announcing on his weekly radio show that he's not changing coaches this season.
This doesn't come as a surprise, no matter how much fans want Phillips gone.
Philosophically, Jerry simply doesn't believe interim coaches work in the NFL. And he doesn't want to try it for the first time entering an off-season without a collective bargaining agreement, because if the owners lock out the players as expected, there won't be anyone around to learn the new offensive and defensive systems.
Jerry has no intention of paying a coach to do nothing, though some meanies would argue he's already paying a coach to do nothing.
As bad as it is right now, the only hope – as slim as it is – the Cowboys have to salvage anything good from this season comes with Phillips as coach because of the stability, if you can call it that, he provides.
Besides, there's not a single sexy option currently on the staff that Jerry can sell to fans and players as a beacon of hope for the final nine games of the season.
Wade is going to be here for a while. Deal with it.
