SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

Question: What now? Are we looking at nothing for the next 20 + yrs?

Clay Danger

Jean-Jacques Taylor: Had a nice impromptu 20-minute chat with Michael Irvin the other day, and we were talking about a lot of the same stuff he said during his rant on the NFL Network about the Cowboys. We agreed on most things. But the single most important thing we talked about is how insidious losing can be, and hot it can infect every aspect of a franchise. The key the players. It’s the organization. Good organizations have a down period for a couple of years, but they always resume their rightful place at the top because they understand what has to be done to win. There’s a reason why the Yankees, the Red Wings, the Red Sox, the Steelers, the Patriots, the Colts, the Lakers, the Celtics, the Spurs and the Mavericks are always in the conversation about the best teams in their respective sports. The reality is the Cowboys have been largely irrelevant since 1996. One playoff win in 13 seasons will do that to a franchise. Until Jerry takes a step back, stops living in a world of denial and takes a backseat so the coach can run the team instead of appearing to be Jerry’s puppet, then this franchise will struggle. Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells did that. Garrett after three days has a tone that resembles theirs, but it’s way too early to know if he can get this group of players to play hard and compete long enough to win games.
