Taylor: Tip for Cowboys coach: You don't have to cuss out players to succeed

03:02 PM CST on Monday, November 15, 2010

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

QUESTION: The players didn't like Jimmy (Johnson). Many of the players talked about how much they hated the things he did, but they trusted him. They had faith that he was going to take them where they wanted to go. Same with Bill Belichick. Players don't need a coach they like; they need one that will hold them accountable, even make them mad. Maybe Garrett is the second coming of Tom Landry?

Mark Dickerson, Albuquerque, NM

TAYLOR: Mark, I love your passion, but let’s not mention Jason Garrett in the same breath with Tom Landry after one win, even though it was a nice performance. There’s a strange theory out there that you have to rant and rave and treat players like dogs for them to play good football. That’s simply not true. You must earn their respect with strong, consistent discipline. Landry never screamed at players. Neither did Tony Dungy. Mike Tomlin isn’t a screamer. Neither is Bill Belichick. All of those men have some type of presence that commands respect. That’s far more important than cussing guys out and demeaning them. If Garrett wants to take that approach, then fine. Bottom line: he has to win games whatever approach he takes.
