Taylor: The worse Cowboys' season goes, the better chance Jerry Jones will hire a big-name coach
11:36 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 27, 2010

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

QUESTION: With the Cowboys having the most difficult remaining schedule, is it possible they have won their only game of the season and could end up with the number one pick in the draft? Do you think this season’s collapse may get Jerry to go back to a dominant coaching personality again?

Dave Machanick

TAYLOR: I don’t think the season will wind up that poorly, though I won’t be surprised at all if they end up with a top five draft pick. The schedule is difficult with road games against Green Bay , New York, Indianapolis and Philadelphia remaining. And now you can throw Arizona in there. Do you think this team is going to show up on Christmas night when it’s 3-11 or 4-10? Nope. This team will also struggle because as the season progresses, it will be more difficult for them to maintain focus in meetings and practice. They won’t study film with the same vigor because this isn’t a young team that’s trying to prove it’s relevant in the NFL, it’s a veteran team that didn’t come close to meeting its Super Bowl objectives. The disappointment over the next several weeks will be profound. The worse this season goes, the better the odds that Jerry will hire a big-name coach because he’s going to need someone with a ring to restore credibility to the organization.

I'd take it just so I wouldn't have to see that helpless look on our coach's face when things are unraveling.

Gruden will at least give you the death stare. That's progress.

Man,I know I said I didn't want Gruden.

But I actually liked some of the things he said Monday night and damned if I don't think he was auditioning for the job.

Still on the fence,I'm not a fan,but a I'd take a little red hen if she was a mean bitch.

I like Gruden more and more. If he isn't atleast considered then I would be pissed.

He won with Dungy's players as some have said, I think we have better offensive personnel than they did, Defense no way...But he could win with these guys and revamped Oline.

My choices are Cowher or Gruden. In that order.

If Cowher decides not to take it, I know Gruden will.

Gruden is appealing because his personality.

But we'd really have to make wholesale changes to the entire team. Not that they aren't warranted. Isn't Grudens offenses incredibly complicated? And would we inturn run a Tampa-2 scheme?

Who were his better assistants, and are any of them available?

Not that it matters . . . I think Garrett gets the gig.
