Taylor: Post-Wade Phillips, Jerry Jones will opt for disciplinarian coach

10:20 AM CDT on Tuesday, October 5, 2010

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

QUESTION: Do you think that this organization will ever win another Super Bowl under this leadership, if there is a seeming unwillingness on their part to bring in a solid, no nonsense coach? I know he brought in Parcells who left before he could go to another bowl, and he did upgrade the talent while here, but I think Jerry did that out of desperation—will that have to happen again for him to change?

Tom Werner, Torrington, Conn.

TAYLOR: You kind of answered your own question. Jerry brought in Parcells for four years, and Parcells is the one who opted to leave after a disappointing fourth season. He turned the franchise into a contender, but Parcells also failed to win a playoff game here. Whenever Phillips gets fired, it happens to virtually every coach, Jerry will probably opt for more of a disciplinarian since he’s had a players’ coach for the past few years. The Cowboys certainly have the talent to make it to the Super Bowl this year. I don’t know that they will, but no one would be shocked if they did.
