The Dallas Cowboys’ new head coach, Jason Garrett, has something his past four predecessors didn’t that could get the Cowboys over the hump to their sixth championship.
According to SportsDay’s Jean-Jacques Taylor, who was writing for Sporting News, Garrett knows what makes owner and GM Jerry Jones tick. As Taylor points out, Garrett played for Jones at one point in his career.
Taylor writes, “Garrett got good results [last season] by paying more attention to detail and holding players accountable. The players respected the discipline, and they responded late in the season.”
Garrett’s favored offensive formations are designed to allow the Cowboys to be a physical, downhill running team. However, the problem is that the Cowboys’ best players are the quarterback, wide receivers and tight ends. So, more often than not, Garrett is forced to return to the air game.
Two of the Cowboys’ top three draft picks in 2011 have a chance of changing this: OL Tyron Smith and RB DeMarco Murray. Smith should instantly shore up the offensive line and Murray should push and challenge Felix Jones for the starting position.
According to an anonymous opponent, ‘the Cowboys had the talent to win the NFC East and go deep in the playoffs. […] Jason Garrett will give them direction and focus. He’s real particular about details, and he’ll make sure they take care of the little things.’
Cowboys fans can only hope this is the scenario that plays out in the 2011.
