Taylor: Cowboys have struggled because they have 'no draft philosophy'

The Dallas Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor made his weekly Friday appearance on Norm Hitzges' radio show on The Ticket to discuss the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys.

Here are Taylor’s comments about the draft philosophy of the Cowboys:

“They have no draft philosophy. And the reason you know they have no draft philosophy is because in 1995 they go, ‘Hey, let’s draft backups this year!’ Two years ago, ‘Let’s draft special-teammers.’ In the 2001 draft, they said: ‘Let’s draft quarterbacks.’ Why don’t you have a philosophy that you follow from year-to-year? No matter what your team needs are, it fits within your philosophy. Kind of like the Baltimore Ravens. Kind of like the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kind of like the Green Bay Packers . Kind of like New England. When you do that, you don’t end up with these glaring holes because you’ve been drafting a team philosophy for a decade. Obviously it changes some [for] other teams where the [new] general manager comes in [and changes things]. No, this is as stable of a franchise when it comes to front offices as there is in the NFL. There’s no reason for this team not to have a philosophy. And they don’t have one. … you can have whatever philosophy you want, just have one.”

And in other news..............shit stinks

Good to see someone especially a local journalist call a spade a spade without sugarcoating it like most Cowboys beat writers. Don't care for him all that much but he is one of the few that doesn't care to criticize and speak his mind.

I can't wait for the day we hire a no-ego, intelligent, workaholic GM (see Ted Thompson). I know it may never come but that doesn't stop it from being a true necessity for us.

Jerry is 67. He can't last THAT much longer.

I like Stephen, and think he'll be better. In fact, I think he'll hire a GM.

Might be wishful thinking, but I've seen/read/heard nothing from him to indicate he has an ego, or needs to have the spotlight, like his father does.

I hope you're right, but I doubt it.

You should see this same thread over at the Zone. The kool-aid is thick over there.

He doesn't have a philosophy because he has no clue what he's doing. It's just fun to pretend he's a GM.

His son is equally shat. He's at the top of the pecking order in personnel and cap management and we've sucked at it since he's been here. If he was truly quality, he'd have told his daddy no when he was asked if he wanted to pretend he was a director of personnel.
