Taylor: Cowboys aren't terrible judges of talent, but huge draft looms
12:38 PM CDT on Friday, October 29, 2010

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

QUESTION: Is it safe to say that the Cowboys organization (Jerry Jones) is a terrible judge of talent. Our drafts have been stinkers except for Dez Bryant. Is the simple answer going to be when Mr. Jerry Jones gives up total control?

RICK C LOPEZ, San Antonio

TAYLOR: I hate to tell you, but that’s simply not true. The 2009 draft was awful. No one can deny that. And when it’s all said and done it will gone down with the “backup” draft of 1995 as one of the worst in franchise history. Overall, though, the Cowboys have done a good job on the draft this decade because we can all agree that the draft is an imperfect science – otherwise players such as Miles Austin and Tony Romo would never have been undrafted free agents. Bobby Carpenter is the only first-round bust this millennium and the Cowboys have generally done a good job with the premium picks – players selected in the first three rounds. What they have not done is draft good offensive linemen. It’s well-documented how many offensive linemen haven’t panned out. Contrary to popular belief. Jerry doesn’t control the draft. Tom Ciskowski leads a group of quality scouts whose opinion weighs more than the coaches in terms of which players to draft. Jerry, like any GM, has opinions but they have to mesh with the scouting department. He’s just not making decisions on his own. That said, this will be a huge draft if the Cowboys continue to underperform and they wind up with a top 10 draft pick.
