Taylor: Bill Parcells didn't dwell on how he got his Cowboys

SportsDay columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor answers a reader's questions about a topic of the day.

Question: The Cowboys have cut the top two picks from the 2009 draft -- Jason Williams and Robert Brewster -- since the season has gotten underway. There are now only four players from that 12-person class on the team's active roster.

Is head coach Wade Phillips alarmed by that turnover?

"I'm not,'' he said. "You keep the best players, whether they're first round picks or last round picks or free agents. That's what we try to do every year.

"You're not going to be perfect on all your draft choices, but you are going to have guys who surprisingly come through for you. We've probably been the best at that with the Tony Romos and Miles Austins of the world.

"They're certainly first round picks now, you know.''

These were Parcells' guys..Is he seriously trying to claim credit for these?

Jean-Jacques Taylor: Not at all. Actually, what he’s doing in this particular situation is referring to another Parcells approach, which is that it doesn’t matter how you acquire talent as long as you do it. Parcells really didn’t make that much of a distinction between the draft, free agency and rookie free agents. He called the entire process, “talent acquisition.” The idea is to get the best players on your team no matter how you do it. Parcells would take it a step further by playing the best players all of the time. That’s why Bobby Carpenter was deactivated for his first game. That’s why former No.1 pick Ebenezer Ekuban was once deactivated. That’s called accountability. If you don’t practice or play well, then you don’t play.

If you don't practice or play well then you don't play...you just hang around for about four years.
