SportsDayDFW phoned The Ticket's Bob Sturm to comment on the Cowboys' 33-30 win over the Redskins. The following is a transcription of the interview:
On Jason Garrett's chances to retain the job, now that he's 4-2 and the Cowboys are 5-9:
I would certainly think so. I would have to believe a final record of 6-10 would put him in the driver's seat. The wild card of course is whether or not Jerry Jones is shopping as we speak for other names. Personally I encourage him to take his time and visit with as many people as necessary. This is not a decision to get wrong. We should remember in 2002 right around this very moment, Jerry was in New York talking to Bill Parcells and keeping a pretty good secret about things. Obviously Garrett appears to be the leader in the clubhouse, but none of no for sure know what Jerry might have up his sleeve. With the personnel issues, I can't say whether or not Garrett is the right man for this franchise. That has very little to do with Garrett, because if they get someone with a greater reputation it would be likely they would demand authority over personnel decisions, which is probably what this franchise really needs.
What do you think of Gerald Sensabaugh, who has improved in grabbing interceptions?
I certainly admire his nose for the ball to make some interceptions, but I still contend my No.1 priority for strong safety must be a physical presence in the middle of the field. A safety who is giving out large hits and intimidating players coming across the middle. And that certainly does not appear to be Sensabaugh's forte. He has some use, but the secondary seems extremely passive and not at all physically intimidating, and I would probably start with my strong safety.
On Bryan McCann, who had two nice returns on Sunday:
He hasn't been without stumbles this season, but he's a guy I really believe the No. 1 return man heading into 2011. I would hesitate to risk Dez Bryant on a regular basis. So the regular duty should be Bryan McCann. He has shown plenty of electricity with the ball in his hand I would love to see more.
On the Cowboys missing Marion Barber on close plays (missing a fourth-and-goal at the 1)
That's a great question. The short yardage runner is very absent on this team without Marion Barber. And that is something, maybe the only thing, he can do better than Felix Jones or Tashard Choice. Fourth-and-short, 3rd-and-short, these extremely difficult situations have gone from bad to worse. I would like to think you can find the specialist during the off-season who does not cost near the amount of money Marion Barber will cost, but I cert concede Barber was good at that compared to his competition.
