“I think you got to look at receiver,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. “I wouldn’t say we’re concerned, I’m just saying that you’re looking for some guys to show up and do something. You lose a player like Dwayne Harris and you don’t replace him in free agency, and you don’t ultimately take a receiver in the draft, we haven’t necessarily designated a guy, ‘Hey, you’re gonna be the roster spot for Dwayne Harris.’

“So it will be very competitive for that fifth spot. If he’s on our team, that’s great. If it ends up being that we continue to look for a guy, then that’s an option as well. Player acquisition, as I always say, is a 365-day a year business and we’ll keep looking for ways to improve our football team.”

The Cowboys recently signed undrafted rookie free agent wide receivers George Farmer, Lucky Whitehead, Deontay Greenberry, Antwan Goodley and Nick Harwell to go along with running back Synjyn Days.

“The other spot we feel a little bit better about is [running back],” Jones said. “But any time you lose an All-Pro like DeMarco Murray was, then it gives you reason to say, ‘Hey, do we have the right guy?’ But we did go get Darren McFadden, who has a great pedigree and I think behind this offensive line and some of the skill set he has can be successful along with, which how we might ultimately do it is by committee. You put him with Lance Dunbar and Joe Randle, we’ve got reason to feel real good about that group, not to mention Ryan Williams.

“But I’d say those two spots are the areas that we look at and we say, ‘Hey, the right situation showed up, we’d [take a look], but we’re also comfortable with what we have. It never seems to fail that we always find very interesting college free agents.”

Interesting how Ryan Williams was basically an afterthought there.

Only concern I would have there is finding the next marquee guy, and soon. Because I have a feeling we're not going to be able to afford Dez after this season, unless we franchise him one more time. Can't afford to do that though, a third time because that would be the highest pay scale, the top 5 QB pay scale.

If I were Stephen I would be hoping for the best, but planning for life without Dez.

I'd rather just trade the 2nd for Brockers.

I think we could do as much as we did last year without a 1800 yard back if we added another player on defense to what we already did to that side of the ball.

I'd hate it (unless of course they won a Super Bowl and it was indisputable that it couldn't have been done without these two)

Brockers has the added hurdle of being in the last year of his contract and it will probably be difficult to obtain a team friendly deal without him having a chance to see the market so I hate the idea of giving up a 2nd for someone that may be on the team for only one year

I'm with you but this all depends on Minnesota not bluffing and/or Peterson not caving in. If the Cowboys have some inside info that the Vikings are going to eventually blink, then absolutely, wait it out.

I'm with you but this all depends on Minnesota not bluffing and/or Peterson not caving in. If the Cowboys have some inside info that the Vikings are going to eventually blink, then absolutely, wait it out.

I don't know a damn thing about how to evaluate talent, so maybe Brockers would be worth it. I just don't like signing these free agents from other teams to big contracts or even a two year rental especially when I have to throw in draft picks to get the deal done but I may be overly averse because of our past experiences and given Romo's age it may be worth considering.

Hardy is a no/low risk deal and he didn't cost them a draft pick. I just don't want them to be wrong again and they haven't fared too well with evaluating other teams players and most recently blew the Mo Claiborne pick. I place a HIGH value on picks, not so much because they're guaranteed to land you a player but because I feel you need as many picks as possible to account for the large number of misses you're guaranteed to have. Not to mention the hit rate is much higher with your highest draft picks.

As far as AP goes, to evaluate this situation, you don't have to have a clue about talent evaluation, its real simple:

1. Minny pays AP 13M guaranteed (if AP is on the roster for game 1) for 2015 and unless they can get AP to agree to renegotiate (& likely have to guarantee more money and be on the hook for a 30 year old running back for even longer), the only other choice is to:

a. release him
b. trade him BUT no team will trade picks for him and keep his current contract so that puts the ball back in AP's court to determine whether he wants to negotiate (all while knowing he'll get $13M from Minny or get released and be able to negotiate with any team he wants)

That's all that can happen and it really boils down to one thing: Is Minny truly prepared to pay AP 13M for 2015? If they're not, all teams have to do is call Minnys bluff, refuse to make a trade and he'll eventually be released.

That's why I want to play chicken with them to either get him for a 4th or less, better yet for no picks.

They could have won the whole thing last year. It's still coaching. Dallas had much better running backs, wide receivers and TEs (as a squad) than the Patriots and look what happened last year. It's not even like having the Patriots whole roster as the Cowboys roster would have any guarantee of anything.

My hope is that, at least on offense, Linehan would just start working with the natural strengths of the team and not try to run some scheme that requires player skills that Dallas just does not have. The offense has strong receiving TEs especially in the short area and has WRs who can take a short pass and find daylight. They also have a QB who should not have to hold the ball very long or take hits.
