Stephen Jones shed no light on his father's thought process regarding head coach Wade Phillips.
Owner Jerry Jones said after Sunday's loss to Jacksonville that he did not in any way want to make a change, but then talked about willing to "do something hard'' if it needed to be done. Stephen Jones, the Cowboys chief operating officer, was asked about that quote Monday.
"Only Jerry can comment on that,'' Stephen said. "I don't have any comment on that.''
What about Phillips' contention in his press conference that he and the staff were the root problem because they have not gotten the players to perform up to their talent level.
"I'm sure everyone has their opinion,'' Stephen said. "I really don't have a response to that.
"I mean, we've just got to play better. The guys are playing hard. I think we are making mistakes, whether it be turnovers or mental errors in the game that cost us plays. Those are things we've got to do better.''
Stephen Jones did acknowledge that everyone is frustrated and disappointed and the worst time to make a decision is when you're emotional. He talked about howe everyone needed to work harder and show some pride.
"Obviously, this wasn't our plan,'' Stephen said. "We certainly didn't think this would happen to this team.
"We feel like we've got good players, I think we've good character on this team, guys who football means a lot to them. It's just hard to explain right now.
"But I will say this. I think the same group of guys and staff and everybody is going to work hard. Our goal is to win a football game.''
