Another blow for Cowboys 2009 draft class: Stephen Hodge released

David Moore / Reporter

Another member of the Cowboys ill-fated 2009 draft class is gone.

The club reached an injury settlement and released Stephen Hodge Thursday afternoon. The linebacker has had microfracture surgery on both knees since he was taken out of TCU in the sixth round of last year's draft.

Hodge appeared in only one pre-season game in his brief stint with the Cowboys. He was placed on Reserve/Injured on September 5, 2009 and spent his rookie season rehabbing. Hodge was placed on PUP in training camp of 2010 as he continued to rehab and injured the other knee before being cleared to practice.

The Cowboys took 12 players in the '09 draft. Only four remain on the active roster _ Stephen McGee, Victor Butler, Brandon Williams and David Buehler. Out of those four, Buehler and Butler are the only two who get any sort consistent playing time.

Two other players from that class _ Manny Johnson and Robert Brewster _ landed on the practice squad while tight end John Phillips has spent the season on injured reserve.

I actually think he was a real nice late round prospect. The injuries just got him.

This is what happens when you drat players with bad knees.

The 2009 class has Jerry's fingerprints all over it.

It was awful.

We could still get a few solid players out of it. Butler, Phillips and Buehler. So it's not a total loss, but still really bad.

Maybe this was a statement move by Garrett.

You want to get the attention of the players? Cut Stephen Hodge.

We didn't strike out on all of them like Jerry normally does when he wants to show everyone how he can evaluate talent.
