That phrase about never going home again doesn’t really apply to the Cowboys’ coaching staff.
It’s not like it’s a new trend here, but the makeup of this current staff will have about a handful of guys that are in their second tour of duty with the club – in some capacity.
Now Jerry Jones got blamed for hiring the so called “re-treads” like an Ernie Zampese or Jack Reilly or even Dave Campo the second time around.
But Jason Garrett, who is also in his second stint with the team, seems to have his comfort zone with guys that he’s familiar with.
It sounds like the Cowboys will officially hire strength coach Mike Woicik, although nothing has been announced just yet. Woicik held the job here from 2000-06, which spans four seasons when Garrett was a player.
Campo remains the secondary coach in now his third season of his second term. Of course Campo was the defensive coordinator for most of Garrett’s time as a player in Dallas.
Garrett and Wade Wilson were both backups to Troy Aikman in the mid-90’s. Now Wilson is set for a seventh year as Cowboys quarterbacks coach, and the fourth year in his second stint.
And offensive line coach Hudson Houck held the same title in Dallas when Garrett was a player, then the two coached on the same staff for two seasons in Miami before both coaches arrived in Dallas in 2007.
Like anything, a coaching staff needs its variety. Just like it’s important to have a good mix of personalities, race, experience, age – it’s also good to have a few guys that have been around here. They know how things work from the top to the bottom.
