Tony Romo has averaged just over 23 completions a game, under Jason Garrett. That comes out to approximately 360 completions a year. If you were to guestimate how those 360 completions were to be divided up amongst what you believe will be our receiving corps next year, what would those numbers look like?

Heres my stab:

Miles Austin - 90 receptions
Jason Witten - 70 receptions
Dez Bryant - 65 receptions
Murray & Felix combined - 50 receptions
Roy Williams - 35 receptions
Harris - 20 receptions
Bennett - 20 receptions
Others (Fb/3rd TE, etc) - 10

I wouldn't be suprised if we ran the ball more, and that number (360) was down.

But if I had to guess, my numbers would look about like this:

Dez - 80
Witten - 70
Austin - 70
Roy - 40
Bennett - 20
Murray - 20
Harris - 15
Jones - 10
Everyone else - >15

I think the backs need to show more receptions... Right now you're showing between 30 and 45 receptions to the running backs. That's too low.

I wish they could cut Roy Williams, but I imagine when football resumes there will still be a salary cap of some kind and Roy's cap impact if cut is something crazy, like 12 million. Dallas already has a huge amount committed to players on the roster, so the team can't both cut Williams and sign key free agents.

Way to go, Jerral.

Exactly! You throw more to them by design (and not just screens) and defenses will be left guessing which lanes to take away from Romo. A guy like Felix Jones can destroy you if he gets the ball quickly enough in space.

The defense is forced to cover the whole field, short, medium, and deep. Checkdowns are fine, but should not be the only way to get your RB's into the receiving game.

Well, you have to take into consideration they'll play a combined 16 games, due to injuries.

I would figure that all the backs combined (RB and FB) will get 4 receptions per game, i.e. 60+ for the season.

That would be ideal. I really don't see the FB being a threat in the passing game.

I havent' seen it from Garrett to date. Of course, that could have more to do with the lack of a quality receiving FB.

Appearantly Chapas is decent.

Bingo.

It's been a long time since a FB was a receiving threat in the Cowboy offense.

Wait, so we're gonna shake up the league using our marginal white FB now?

There's a reason why the position is becoming extinct.

We can cut Roy after the June 1st date (or whatever that new date is) and spread the cap hit over two seasons. It would save more cap room in the end because we will not be paying his 2011 base salary.

Shake up the league?

No.

Use him as a threat in the receiving game, especially on short yardage situations?

Yes.

Yes.

That's the bottom line.

In the past if a FB comes into the game, it's one less guy the defense has to worry about because the FB isn't getting the ball.

I disagree entirely. I think with Garrett being a former quarterback and having full control of the team, we will throw the ball even more.

You have to believe Garrett is smart enough to realize the clear strength of our offense is in our group of receivers, to include the tight ends. Furthermore, our running backs are all noted as being decent receivers.

There's some merit to that.

Sometimes I think they go to Witten too often.

Secret plays.

Naw, he's the best TE in football. He gets the ball a fair amount.

If anything, you could argue he doesn't get targeted enough in the red zone.
