Sources: Tony Romo to have X-rays

By Chris Mortensen

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will have new X-rays taken of his broken collarbone within the next 24 hours to further evaluate whether he will return under center in December, according to team sources.

Romo may have the X-rays taken today at Cowboys Stadium as the Cowboys play the Detroit Lions, a source said. If the X-rays are discouraging, the team will discuss whether he should be placed on injured reserve. But a source conceded there was no urgency to make a decision.

If the broken collarbone is healing properly, there's a growing sentiment in the organization and from owner Jerry Jones that Romo should return to the lineup if he can help them to a strong finish, regardless of the very slim playoff chances. Jones believes a strong finish has value for the team's morale and marketing efforts for 2011, but not at the risk of further injury to Romo if there is uncertainty about the collarbone.

When Romo broke his collarbone on Oct. 25 in a Monday night loss to the New York Giants, it was reported he would need anywhere from six to 10 weeks to properly heal.

Tony Romo does some throwing, X rays scheduled

Todd Archer / Reporter

For the first time since suffering a broken left collarbone against the New York Giants on Oct. 25, Tony Romo did some light throwing before Sunday's game against Detroit.

Romo is scheduled to have X-rays on the collarbone on Monday but a determination on when or if the quarterback will return this season has not been made.

"We didn't think an X ray or X rays would help us make this decision," owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. "It's going to be how it's feeling."

When Romo suffered the injury he was expected to need 6-8 weeks of recovery time. As a rule bones take six weeks to heal. If he is able to return on the short end of the recovery time he could be back for Dec. 12 vs. Philadelphia. If it is an eight-week recovery, then he could be back for the final two games of the season.

We're liable to take a step back with Romo coming back. Kitna's in a decent groove. Romo has to be rusty.

Kitna didn't look good today at all. He wasn't accurate on flares and screens today after that 1st drive. I'll take a rusty Romo over what I saw today for sure.

They'd have to make that call when they see him in practice.

He works hard, so I suspect if he can come back he's gonna do everything he can to make sure he's prepared.

I doubt Romo is healed in 6 weeks. I don't know if anyone has ever come back from a fractured collarbone that quickly.

Though I guess it depends on where the break is and I don't think that was ever reported.

But you know he's going to take a hit on it the first game.

I wonder what the risk is if he comes back too soon. If all it is is another 6-8 weeks of healing, then it's no risk at all. We don't need him in January and February.

Its an easy thing to figure out, docs can look at the x-rays and see if its fully healed.

If it has, and he isnt physically limited then he should play.

.

Wasnt it a broken clavicle Aikman suffered in 1998? He missed 5 games with that injury.

I still see no point in playing him.

If you can't compete for a championship, bringing him back makes no sense.

One more loss and McGee would be starting for me the rest of the year.
