The Dallas Cowboys have apparently narrowed the selection for the No. 9 overall draft pick down to two players. Actually, one of the players is penciled in with the ninth pick and the other will require the Cowboys to trade up. Sources close to the team say Dallas team owner and general manager Jerry Jones is working on a deal to move up in the draft and select LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.
USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith has been at the top of the Cowboys’ draft board for a few weeks now, especially since Peterson is now expected to be taken in the top three picks. It would not behoove the Cowboys to trade one or more of the team’s current draft picks to move up and get Peterson. It’s not even in the team’s best interest to take Peterson if he somehow slips to No. 9.
The question now is obviously which scenario Jones will choose to play out. The Cowboys could easily sit tight and take Smith at No. 9 and then move on to the second round. However, Jones has a history of moving up just a few spots to take a player he really wants. That player is usually not one the Cowboys actually need, but that defines Jones completely. The Cowboys do need help in the secondary, but not nearly as bad as the offensive line.
The sources close to the team have clearly stated that there’s a 50-50 chance the Cowboys take either player. Their thinking is Jones will work out some sort of deal if Peterson slips out of the top three picks. However, the sources also said they wouldn’t be surprised if Jones moved all the way up to No. 3 or even No. 2 to take Peterson, a player he covets like he did receiver Dez Bryant in last year’s draft. Stay tuned.
