Source: Jets work out Andy Dalton
The New York Jets have their quarterback of the present and future in Mark Sanchez, but they conducted a private, on-campus workout Friday with TCU's Andy Dalton, according to a league source.
Dalton is a fast-rising prospect who could slip into the bottom of the first round, according to scouts. The Jets own the 30th overall pick. While it makes no sense for them to invest another first-round pick in a quarterback, the Jets' interest in Dalton could be a way to entice quarterback-needy teams below them to trade up, increasing the value of the Jets' position.
That might be a tough sell, considering they picked Sanchez fifth overall only two years ago.
Beyond Sanchez, the Jets' quarterback depth chart is filled with question marks. Mark Brunell, 40, remains on the roster, signed for one more season, but his greatest value is that of a mentor for Sanchez. Career backup Kellen Clemens, a free agent, and Kevin O'Connell are the third and fourth quarterbacks.
Dalton (6 foot 2 and 213 pounds) is attractive to teams who run the West Coast offense. He completed 66 percent of his attempts last season, throwing for 27 touchdowns and six interceptions.
Several teams below the Jets are in the quarterback market, including the Buffalo Bills (No. 34), Cincinnati Bengals (No. 35), Arizona Cardinals (No. 38) and Tennessee Titans (No. 39).
