The NFL can pretty much do anything it wants, right? They seem to change rules as we go.
So in a year when undrafted rookies are going to be at a complete disadvantage and will have a very tough time to make a roster, why not change another rule.
This is just me thinking aloud and not really understanding all the rules that go into play. But I’m wondering why the NFL didn’t extend the draft out past seven rounds. It’s not like they haven’t gone that route before.
The last year the league had a 12-round draft was 1992. It went to eight rounds in 1993 and then beginning in 1994, it was seven rounds.
But does it have to be? Why not push the draft out to 15 rounds this year. Because once that final pick is made in the seventh round, then things will again be frozen and the teams won’t be able to even talk to players or agents that were undrafted.
Who knows when the lockout will be resolved? But if it goes into August or even late July, not only will be difficult for any rookie free agent to make the team, but they really won’t be needed as much. Without as many mini-camps and OTA practices in the summer, there will be more time spent with the veterans, especially on defense to learn Rob Ryan’s new system.
Like everything, it probably comes down to money. But in a year like this, it would seem to make sense to extend the draft a few rounds.
