So much for the future: Better chance you will see Tony Romo than Stephen McGee

Owner Jerry Jones made it pretty clear that he has no plans on giving up on the season and turning to third string quarterback Stephen McGee in an effort to evaluate him for the future.

Jones said he believes 37-year old Jon Kitna gives them the best chance to win until injured starter Tony Romo returns. Romo is out with a broken collarbone until possibly the second to the last game of the season. And while there was talk of the Cowboys putting him in injured reserve, Jones is now talking about potentially getting Romo back on the field.

“At this juncture, I wouldn’t guess on that,” Jones said when asked on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM when he would play McGee. “We have eight games left. We are going to play to win every game. And Kitna gives us the best chances to win. Kitna can play quarterback and give us a chance to win. As we move forward, Tony will get better and we will have potential to have him. I can’t answer your question (on McGee).”

I disagree. This season is done. Kitna won't be back next season. Romo will be here. Need to see if Dallas needs to find a #2 or do they already have one?

I agree.

You gain absolutely nothing playing Romo or Kitna. You know what they are. Added wins just drops your draft position. Wins are worthless the rest of the year.

But you can find out if McGee can play a little. In a real game.

A horrible and fake General Manager makes the decision to waste that opportunity.

I think as long as Dallas has a chance of making the playoffs (I know it's slim but there is still a chance) they should do whatever it takes to win. But once Dallas has no chance of making the playoffs (which I believe will happen in a couple of weeks) then I think Dallas should kinda treat the rest of the games kinda like pre-season games and see what Stephen McGee and the other backups can do.

That's fine. Lose this week and then you're at 8 losses. Season officially over. Playing Romo or Kitna makes no sense at that point. You have to look big picture and it absolutely does the Cowboys more good to see McGee in there in regular season action. Because once you are out of the playoff picture, the rest of the season is about learning what you have and what you need for next year. You learn nothing with Romo or Kitna. All you maybe get is a couple of feel good wins that don't amount to shat in 2011.

But, on the flip side, Garrett isn't about to use his 8 game trial period throwing a guy like McGee in to evaluate.

I can understand that. He's fighting for his job. But I do think playing the kid would be best for the Cowboys. At least then you have some idea of what kind of player he is as you enter the offseason.

Garrett Wants To Play McGee, But ...
Posted by jellis at 11/12/2010 3:36 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com

For all the folks asking whether the Cowboys are considering starting second-year quarterback Stephen McGee at some point this year, think about looking backward for an answer.

With the Cowboys never really competitive in the second half against Green Bay last week, Jon Kitna played the entire game regardless. Now, Wade Phillips was the head coach in that game, not Jason Garrett, but it doesn't sound like Garrett sees things any differently than Phillips did in this respect.

Garrett says he wants to play McGee, but Kitna gives the Cowboys the best chance to win at this point.

"We want to put Stephen in any situation that we can, to evaluate him and also to help him as a player," Garrett said. "We gave him a lot of preseason reps. He got a whole game our last preseason game, and that's an important process for him. He needs to play.

"Having said that, Jon Kitna needs to play too. Jon Kitna's our quarterback. He's done an outstanding job for us so far. He needs to get more reps, more game experience in this offense, so that was valuable for us. Whenever you're behind in a football game, we're going to keep fighting and keep playing, and keeping our best people out there as much as we can without putting them in harm's way."

In addition to scout team duties, Garrett said he likes to sneak McGee in occasionally with the first team during practice to keep him comfortable in the offense.

Jason Garrett may be the only guy(right now)hoping for a lockout next spring.

This roster must be churned, and to do that, youngsters must play, slackers must sit."We can still win"doesn't help Garrett,or the Dallas Cowboys.

To say Oberfuhrer Jones is delusional is understating the case wildly.Does he really believe this?

There are 7 NFC teams with at least a 4 game lead in the loss column over the Cowboys. At least 5 of those are legitimate playoff teams(NFC version). That's not even counting the West.
