After WW2, one of the main reasons why the US became such an economic superpower was because of it's strong manufacturing base. Millions of Americans had respectable, well-paying 9-5 jobs in factories and plants making a variety of products. "Made in the U.S.A" was a source of national pride. This allowed American citizens a then-unparalleled middle class standard of living, and created a strong economy for the nation.

However, since then many American companies have taken their manufacturing plants and factories overseas because it's cheaper for them to have their products made in China, India, and other countries.

This has, from what I can tell, had the following effects on the country:

  • With a growing population but a reduction in jobs, American unemployment has gone up, creating an increase in the number of people relying on the state.
  • Without as many well-paying jobs, the American middle class has been surpassed in size by the American lower class
  • Whe rise of the lower class has also given way to a rise in crime, as poverty has been shown to have a direct link to instances of crime
  • The American economy suffers, because the average American citizen has less disposable income to circulate back into the system, and less total income to be taxed from

Meanwhile, rich corporations get richer by cutting the costs of how much they pay their employees.

Should the US government pass legislation that says that US corporations must have their goods manufactured on American soil, thus creating more jobs at home and stimulating the economy, or would this cause too many corporations to leave the US entirely?

Thoughts?
